I have come across MGSections in Infantry Regiments before.

Kind regards.

 Tom.

I know they were there earlier but by 1916 they'd been placed in to Brigade MG Company's etc - I'm not sure if battalions reformed them later to replace those.

An example.

AThe Weekly Irish Times. Ireland’s Roll of Honour. December 16, 1916. Private James Arnett Baird, Machine Gun Section, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, killed in action on 13th November, while serving with the Naval Division, was the youngest son of Mrs Baird,

14 Glenarm Avenue
, Drumcondra, Dublin. Prior to enlisting he was employed in the ----inf frim of Messrs Eckford, City Quay, and was well known in athletic circles in Dublin. Tow of his brothers, Trooper John Baird, North Irish Horse, and Private David Baird, Royal Dublin Fusiliers (M.G.S.), have been wounded in action.

Only 2 MGC deaths on 06/09/1918.

(Curiously both have 'J' starting forenames):

PAYLOR, J W Private 148607 06/09/1918 22 Machine Gun Corps United Kingdom VI. A. 25. PERNES BRITISH CEMETERY document-icon.gif
PRIGG, W J Private 13492 06/09/1918   Machine Gun Corps United Kingdom Plot 2. Row C. Grave 7. BOSCON BRITISH CEMETERY document-icon.gif

Paylor's parents lived in Yorkshire.

Prigg, not recorded.

EDIT: There are 11 more as MGC(Infantry) & MGC(Cavalry)- But none really stand out as possible matches.

74 MGC deaths in September 1918. No Greenes.

So 1916 rather than 1918 ( I did wonder about the earlier date report)

#27255 Greene does not show in the effects records but I'll look further.

I think I found him,

What do you think guys?

http://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/751264/FARRELL, JAMES

He's your man Tom, good spot.

#27255 Farrell shows as alias John Greene in the effects records. Effects paid to his mother Bridget Green(e). 26 months qualifying service at time of death.

Aye, these people using aliases are a pain. There is a NoK address on the will which which might  - for a Mrs M Green (suggested to be a widow by the newspaper write-up so I'd expect her using her initial rather than a husbands ? ) - 32 Cuffe Street.

Looking on the Dublin electoral register doesn't show past 1915 unfortunately for the address - http://databases.dublincity.ie/burgesses/search_new.php?currentpage=47&searchtype=advanced&search_name=&search_address=cuffe+street&startyear=0&endyear=0&search_qualification=&search_division_name=&search_ward=

EDIT:

Mary Greene is  a sister by the looks of it and Bernard (or Barnard Greene) #18037 was a witness so it is the right family on the census link.
