Was just going to say, that MIC above looks like it says "POW" to me, not "DOW".

EDIT: From the POW records on FMP:

Does the MIC for Jeremiah O'Neill 7478 not say P o W = Prisoner of War?

Thought likewise

ICRC https://grandeguerre.icrc.org/en/File/Details/1781165/3/2 as 74781 [but showing on one record as 7478]

M

Edit: Pension card at WFA/Fold3 as 7478 also shows he went on have a post-war 7212061 number with the Welsh [Regiment?]

Alan old buddy. I see you are heading across the Serengeti with the Wildebeest!! Focus lad, focus.

He is found, his name, posted earlier turned out to be-

O'Neill    Denis    Private    Connaught Rangers    Berehaven, County Cork    13/01/1918    A single man, died at Castletown Bere Workhouse, from trench fever pneumonia cardiac failure certified 3 weeks.    Rossmackowen Catholic Churchyard, County Cork.
Serial No: 3631/3531
Unit: 6th Battalion
Age: 20
Born: Castletownbere, County Cork
Enlisted: Cork
Next of Kin:
Grave or Memorial: About six yards East of the Church
Notes: Number listed as 3631 (Soldiers Died In The Great War) 3531 (Commonwealth War Graves Commission). Death certificate under Jeremiah Neill.

I have come across many incorrect death certificates, some due to alias's, some to bad writing, others to wrong information so it is not as unusual as you may think, legal and all as they are.

Kind regards.

Tom.

a) Trench fever-   Did this lad ever go near France, or was Trench Fever so endemic that he went down with it without ever leaving Co. Cork?

b)  Age 20 at death- and no conscription in Ireland. So an 18 year old-perhaps- enlisting with the Brits. c early 1916  or so?

Went to France and looks like he must have enlisted earlier.

Paul you could be right but no evidence so far, thank you.

Thank you Matlock for the card, I did not have it.

Sleep well all and try not to let it keep you awake too long.

Kind regards.

Sure, well probably sure, you noticed it, but just in case [should have mentioned it earlier]  - the notes on his card indicate his medals were returned and thus not issued. ?? No kin to accept, or wanting to accept ??

I am working on the possibility that the lad below and the DC are the same man, but I cannot connect them, can you help please?

Terry says the gap is too long between discharge and death

Well that argument wouldn't stand up in a court of law.

Discharged due to service induced nephritis? Dies of nephritis?

Black and white, open and shut case Tom.

Ah I see Dai, you are bringing logic into the conversation. Most times it works other times not so much.

Have a great day!"

Kind regards.

Can only find the following card for Aylward, which doesn't say much:

aylward.jpg.ce8c98f7460f7149a63e7a10d6512a1f.jpg

The service record says he was age 33 on discharge, which is slightly older than the man on your DC.

Thank you kindly Paul, I did not have this. I see your point with the age though. It may not be him.

The war gratuity couldn't be paid out as no relative could be located.
