Mark1959 Posted 19 March , 2022 Share Posted 19 March , 2022 FWR have a transcribed record and this has led me to edit out the ref to Callaghan being a regular. Seems he was 50 and spent a few days in France J Callaghan Age: 50, 4 months service, Admitted 8/1/15. Notes written in the Observations Column: Reinforcements told permenantly unfit to go home, but not admitted this day. Roman Catholic. Entry crossed through on original data source. Ref: MH106/881 MH106/881 can be found at The National Archives in Kew, and contains First World War Representative Medical Records of No. 2 General Hospital: 04/01/1915 to 03/12/1915. British Other Ranks. No. 2 General Hospital at QUAI D'ÉSCALE, HAVRE Ser: 86-394 and Transfers Ser: 1-392. Looks doubtful he ever got as far as the 2RMF. Probably turned round and sent home

museumtom Posted 20 April , 2022 Author Share Posted 20 April , 2022 May we ask for your help yet once again please lads and lassies? it is last chance saloon for this ex-soldier. Try as we might we cannot find anything at all on him, so we may have to pass him by, can you help please? Joseph Love, from Newtowncunningham, Letterkenny, County Donegal. A single man, died after discharge to the reserve on 27/06/1916 at Letterkenny Asylum from pulmonary tuberculosis of the lungs. A single man. This may be him in the Census. Ivor Anderson Posted 20 April , 2022 Share Posted 20 April , 2022 (edited) 38 on 27 June 1916 would point to a birth c.1877/8. A Joseph Love was born in Dame St. Enniskillen on 20 Dec 1877. Father Joseph, mother Mary (irishgenealogy.ie): Another Joseph Love was born in Strabane district 8th April 1876, but he would be 40 in June 1916. Possibly an Inniskilling Fusiliers connection? Mark1959 Posted 20 April , 2022 Share Posted 20 April , 2022 (edited) Tricky one. Cannot find a military record at the moment but a Joseph Love was committed to the Lunatic Asylum at Letterkenny in 1907. The incident happened at Ballyhaskey yards away from Newton Cunningham. This Joseph asked someone to shoot him. This seems to fit the few known facts and if it is he was very unlikely to be involved with WW1. https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=IRE%2FPETTYS%2F005174282%2F00215&parentid=IRE%2FPETTYS%2F005174282%2F00215%2F2396908 edit There is a Joseph Love from Enniskillen who joined the RDF - 5436 - in 1895 on a 7/5 enlistment aged 18. He declares previous service in the Donegal Artillery Militia in which still serving. He has QSA and KSA. The QSA with several clasps including Relief of Ladysmith. Spends 4 years in South Africa and another in the East Indies. To reserve March 1903. He is discharged 1/7/1907 from the reserve as medically unfit for further service. This is about a month after the above man's committal and before his reserve term should expire. His Nok is his sister Sarah Ellen Love who has an address of Strabane Convent. https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=gbm%2fwo97%2f5363%2f117%2f001&parentid=gbm%2fwo97%2f5363%2f938054 So we have a soldier who declares service in Donegal militia but is originally from Enniskillen. Is he the same chap that gets committed to Letterkenny Asylum? All very circumstantial. Edited 20 April , 2022 by Mark1959
museumtom Posted 20 April , 2022 Author Share Posted 20 April , 2022 Thank you kindly Mark, circumstantial but lots to consider. The lad in the asylum sounds like our guy to be honest. That was stunning Mark, you are like a dog with a bone and we are the beneficiaries of such dedication. Thank you kindly for all your hard work. Kindest regards. Tom.
