Hello again, Dick

Can you please help me with confirmation of the first names of this man who was at Forest School.

He was killed on August 17, 1916. This is his Wisden obit:

CAPT. A. J. WAUGH (R.A.M.C attached to North Staffordshire Regiment) fell in action in August. He was in the Forest School Eleven in 1903 and two following years, being a very useful all-round player. In 1904, besides taking thirty-eight wickets for 25.07 runs each, he headed the batting averages with 33.23, scoring 128 in an innings and carrying his bat through for 79 against Aldenham. Later he appeared in Essex C. and G. matches.

CWGC has only initials and I think he is Arthur John or James.

He also played football for the Casuals.

Regards

Andrew

Hi Dick

Me yet again. I think you have the Wellington Register and I'm looking for what it might have on Geoffrey Ivan Francis Tothill, who, was born in 1894 so I would guess he would arrive at Wellington in about 1907

Many thanks John

Hello Dick,

Three or four years back I obtained a couple of large, detailed photographs of the Oakham School cricket teams in 1914 and 1915. I'd be very grateful if you'd be able to provide any further service/background details from the school register, however brief, on the individuals featured. Just a full name for the missing ones if you have it would be a good start for me!

As always, Dick has provided some great information.

FYI, these Oakham boys had obituaries in Wisden, though I have found little extra detail about them [inside square brackets]:

2ND LT CHARLES CALDWELL SILLS, of the South Wales Borderers, who was born on December 24, 1893, was killed in action on September 26, 1914, at the battle of the Aisne. For five seasons he was in the Oakham School XI, being captain in 1911 and 1912… In 1913 he played an innings of 103 for Sandhurst against Woolwich. He also appeared occasionally for Aldershot Command and was a member of the MCC.

2ND LT LANCELOT JOHN AUSTEN DEWAR (RMLI), killed November 13, 1916, aged 20. Oakham School XI, 1913–14–15 (captain in 1915). {W1918}

[His brother David (“Sonnie”) died on March 22, 1918, aged 24.]

LT-COL CHARLES EDWARD FISHBOURNE (Northumberland Fusiliers), who died of wounds on October 6, 1916, aged 47, was in the Oakham School Eleven and subsequently took part in much military cricket. He served in the South African War.

2ND LT ARTHUR FREDERICK TAVERNER (Shrops Light Infantry), who died of wounds on October 11, 1916, aged 19, was in the Oakham School Eleven in 1915.

CAPT DOUGLAS ALEXANDER HALL (York and Lancaster Regt), killed April 23, 1917, aged 22. Oakham School XI, 1914.

2ND LT LEONARD ARTHUR KINGHAM (Royal Berks Regt), killed August 10, 1917, aged 20. Oakham School: captain of XI. Previously wounded.

LT HERBERT ALBERT VINCENT WAIT (Royal Berks Regt), killed on December 2, 1917, at Passchendaele, aged 19. Oakham School XI, 1914–15. {W1919}

MAJOR JOHN HUGH JERWOOD (Durham Light Infantry, attd Somerset Light Infantry). Military Cross. Twice wounded. Killed March 21, 1918, aged 28. Captain of XI at Oakham School; Jesus Coll, Camb, XI.

[His MC, gazetted two weeks before his death, states: “He maintained his position, regardless of withdrawals on his right and left and of the fact that the enemy had penetrated the line on both his flanks. He displayed a coolness and fearlessness which inspired all ranks with confidence.”]

Percy Chapman was a Wisden Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year in 1919 but by then he was at Uppingham.

I would love to see the photographs.

Hi Dick

Do you have, by chance, information on the Blue School in Wells? At the time of the war it would have been known as the Grammar school.

Thanks

Sue

Sue: Sorry, I have nothing on Blue School in Wells. There are very few published rolls of honours or registers for grammar schools, compared to pubic schools. Regards, Dick Flory

Hi Dick

Do you have the WWI Rolls of Honour for Arlington Park College, Chiswick, and / or Gunnersbury School, Chiswick?

I am researching names on a Roll of Honour at a Chiswick church, and in some cases I'm struggling to find the link to the parish.

One of my "mysteries" was Ivor Reginald ("Jerry") Pogose, who is described in a footnote to Bill's book on Gommecourt as having attended Arlington Park College, Chiswick, which made me think you might have the Roll of Honour for the college. I am wondering if this was the link for the others? Do you have any more information for Jerry Pogose?

My other mysteries are:

Edward Pius Bendix - Sergeant L/22938, “C” Bty, 162nd Bde, Royal Field Artillery

John Paterson Malcolm - Rifleman 4407, 1st / 16th London Regiment, Queen’s Westminster Rifles

Do they appear on the roll for either school?

Many thanks

Sarah

Hi Dick

Could you also see what there is in the Wellington register for Fitzmaurice Scoones who I don't have a DOB for but he seems to have been born circa 1895 which would put him entering the school around 1908 (I would think)

This is extremely kind of you. Would you have a register for Sleaford Grammar School, Lincolnshire. Name I am searching for is Alfred Greetham. He joined RFA in May 1917. Would have been at the grammar school from c.1906 - 1912 or a bit later.

Many thanks and kind regards.
