Thank you Dick. My conclusion is that he is clearly not the 21 year old ST Swaby who died in 1918 and is on CWGC.

I can only presume that the Hon Sec of the Club saw a name in the newspaper and jumped to a conclusion without investigating further.

The perils of 'well-meaning but unreliable witnesses'.

Across the whole war, he appears to have been wide of the mark by underrecording some 30+ players - in itself, some proof of the scale of loss in this communityand the difficulty of keeping track.

Many thanks as always.

Stephen

Hello Dick

I would be most grateful if you would be kind enough to see if there is an entry for James Cecil Findlay in the Repton School Register/Roll of Service in the Great War. The 1911 Census shows he was a scholar (Boarder) at Repton School. Many Thanks.

Regards

Ron

Dick,

Sorry to bother you so quickly, but I've just been able to confirm that a Royal Navy casualty, Lieut. Oscar Humphrey STOEHR (born 1889, Midshipman 1905, killed HMS Vanguard 1917) had an elder brother Charles Felix Stoehr born c.1883 who was educated at Repton. Later Indian army and served WW1, died 1932.

Are you able to check Repton for his younger brother please, just in case he was there?

Clive

Hello Dick

Not sure if you have St Paul's but if so I'm interested in Thomas Ide, who, looking at his age would have arrived in about 1905 and George De Salis who I think left in 1916

Also (if you have it) Christ's Hospital, Harry Walsham who I estimate should be arriving there in about 1907.

All three fell during the war

Many thanks, as always John

I would appreciate any information you could provide on these officers

Dick

You were brilliantly helpful three years ago in discovering the identity of Niel Fagan who had written in a copy of Wisden 1912 which he gave as a birthday present to his father.

I have another question:

Can you find anything please on C G Clarke who went to Bradfield College and was in the cricket team there in 1916.

He would have been too young to spend much time in the war and hopefully he survived.

Best regards

Andrew

Another wonderful result with an identity revealed.

It seems he did not survive for long.

Thank you so much.
