JMB,

You do have the number (8833) of the smiling tiger that I saved from rusting away in the rafters, it should last another 100years now.

Phil B

JMB started this post in relation to the number of smiling tiger bayonets remaining in circulation and we have seen quiet a few good photos of them show up here on this forum and have had some good feed back on these bayonets, why don't you start a new post on the SMLE smiling tiger rifles in a similar way.

I am sure we would all like to see some nice close up individual photo shots of your rifles and you never know, it might bring some more of the smiling tiger rifles out of the woodwork.

Cheers

Number 326; looks like a new one for the list. That site does have some expensive bayonets listed at times, wonder if they sell.

When taking a photo of a site like that, try right clicking on the one you want and selecting "save image as" and uploading the photo only, or editing your photo first otherwise may upset eBay or the seller.

TR

JMB,

Another one just popped up here for sale, smiling tiger number 8496 and it also appears to be a new one for the list. Two new ones in quick time, this one is also a bit on the expensive side, with well rotted grips.

Cheers

Mr TR,

It is funny how the trickle never quite dries up.

Thanks for this new one.

Hi Another one for you.

I bought this at auction in Sydney in November 1974. It cost me AUD$7, that's the equivalent of about AUD$91 today. Its pretty rough, with the steel scabbard.

The auctioneers Hamilton & Miller of Camperdown were doing 1 or 2 militaria auctions a year back then. The bulk of the material was coming from a gun shop in Sydney who were doing bulk imports from the UK and were using the auctions to clear a big chunk of the stock for a quick turn around.  So it was probably sourced from the UK and imported that year, but I cannot confirm this.

Cheers

Hi chasemuseum,

That is a nice smiling tiger bayonet and scabbard, looks a bit better condition then most. The number 9088 is a new one for JMBs list and 3rd new numbers in about 24 hours. "a new litter".

Good story to go with it also, Mick Smiths gun shop and Horsley Parks old gun shop both used to have heaps of bayonets in stock.

Phil B,

If you scroll up you will see that I added 8496 yesterday. At least we are keeping our eyes out in search for the newies.

Cheers,

TR

TR,

Can I take it that Mick Smith’s and Horsley Parks old gun shops are/were in Sydney?

JMB,

Yes, Mick Smith,s shop is still in the centre of Sydney and Horsley Park gun shop still operates in Western Sydney area at Horsley Park. I remember lots of 1907 bayonets laying on the floor along one wall of the old shop before renovations, I believe my 07 1918 Mole came to town from those bayonets.

In the 70s there were three gun shops in George St Sydney in the CBD. Shooters Home, Shooters Supplies and Mick Smiths. MS was by far the largest, it was three terrace shops merged as a single building, with I think 3 floors but the public were only allowed on the ground floor. Three more gunshops openned/moved into the city in the late 70s/early 80s. Hymo Petzyl's colonial gunshop, Mackenzie's Gun Exchange and Tony Hodge's Armoury. Mick's and Tony's were both bulk importers and retailers, Mackenzies did specialist imports and the others were retail only.  There were also bulk importers in Brisbane and Melbourne.

Back in the 70s & 80s the tiger bayonets were fairly common, but I never remember seeing one in an original leather scabbard. Back then Thai/Siamese material did not have a lot of interest, although there was quite a lot about, siamese mausers, arisakas and arisakas cut down to look like M1 carbines. Tony Hodges was always importing the rifles, mostly from Belgium and Indonesia. The condition was usually some where between bad and scrap metal.

The Australian market had a terrible reputation back in the 70s. The Czech government put 1500 G43s on the market with 180 rubbish clunkers as spare parts. The nice ones stayed in Europe and the clunkers came out here. I had to surrender my G43 when we banned semi-autos.

G’Day from the other Colonies . This one looks to be in the USA. I’ve also located another one in my area of South East Queensland that I’m hoping to get a look at soon. At this rate the register should be a lot bigger this time next year

Phil,

Thanks for spotting that one (7269), but it actually surfaced on eBay in the US at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11 month.

Yes, there does seem to have been a little flurry of activity recently.

Current score is 179, so 200 by end of next year is just possible.....but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks for all of your help, and Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year to all of you spotters down under!

Regards,

JMB

JMB,

Think you transposed the numbers, which is getting easier to do as time goes by; it is actually 6279.

Would it be possible to update the list when you get a chance, makes it a bit easier to keep track of numbers already accounted for.

All the best for Christmas to you, and to the rest of the crew members, merry Christmas also.

I am sure we will all keep looking for those new elusive smiling tiger numbers.

Phil B, did you notice that number 326 that you added above, at $599.99 is showing as being sold, if so, that is one heck of a price.

Cheers,

TR

Hi JMB

thanks for ding this work. It is providing a very interesting statement on the rate of survival of a finite selection of bayonets.

Its always curious to know how many of any class of military hardware survive 50 or 100 years latter.

Looks like another new number, 2702 for the list when checked out by JMB. More eyes on the look out also, with your mate checking in.

Cheers,

TR
