Leslie Drew Fisher?

Not him, though there is a similarity.

Am I on the right lines with the Fisher King?

Absolutely not. There is a tenuous saintly link, and like Fisher he did serve on the water.

As well as being awarded his first D.S.O. as a Commander, he was given a trophy by the enemy Captain for the same action.

Getting nowhere with this!

Ok. He was given O.B.E. after the war. He served briefly in WW2 as a non-combatant, but didn't live to see the end of it.

His actions in W.W.1 were  against subs, and later, Bolshies.

He was known for fortitude, and extreme coolness.

Was largely responsible for saving nearly 30 men from almost certain death. Was awarded a separate medal for his part in that.

Well done Uncle George. Easy to see with hindsight that the clues were there. The saintly connection referred to the following:

Fortitutude and extreme coolness are obvious given hindsight.

If you have Amazon Prime there is a great programme about him, and expedition in general. It's called Shakleton's Captain. Highly recommended. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shackletons-Captain-Leanne-Pooley/dp/B085MLN7NV

A remarkable and extraordinary man. And also the hardest WiT to crack that I recall. Time for a week off!

You got there in the end (even though I had to give half a dozen hints), so well played. I'll try to make my next one a little more challenging 😊

We can’t help but notice that there’s a great deal of discontent abroad this winter. Grant Shapps has been very cross about it. Anyway, who is this ? ? ?

Couple of good WIT’s I’ve missed out on participating in UG, due to my router going Kaput the internet in the Knott household has been intermittent for days and gave up the ghost last night…new hub in place now👍

As yet I have no idea to the current WIT, UG, but Grant Shapps aka Michael Green 4 cabinet positions in 5 months, that’s a ripe question for a pub quiz…….

Of the industrial action type?

Shapps is in a permanently angry state. But be careful what you write about him as he has 'form' for altering unflattering comments.

Perhaps a clue might be in order. This chap was dismissed for union activities, which dismissal sparked a strike and a series of unfortunate incidents led to his union being outlawed.

I see that nobody has got this yet so I will take a punt at the answer

The only unions outlawed in the UK have been those associated with Police and Armed Forces. Am I heading in the right direction?

If so I would guess that it is a Police related question because of the  disputes which occu rred during the First World War.

That’s the chap. I’ve linked a very interesting article on this 1918 Police strike, which includes Smuts’ involvement, characteristically nimble footwork from Ll.G, and the establishment of the Police Federation. The image also is from this article.

Beaten to the draw again I suspect.

Tommy Theil was dismissed but later reinstated. Seems to have been dismissed a second time.

Later became an MP

Wiki suggests that he was Metropolitan Police but in fact he was City of London

In a similar vein. A man who went from brave soldier to revolutionary. Involved in a celebrated court case when he was prosecuted under an Act of Parliament dating from the 18th Century
