Knotty Posted Friday at 19:22 Share Posted Friday at 19:22 Been in self imposed exile, but been watching, pretty sure that I found @tankengine888 chap yesterday, stupidly didn’t make a note and I can’t remember his name, it’s a slightly strange one I’ll have a pitch at Lieutenant-Colonel Fox Dark or something like that, died 1915 iirc. Knotty Posted Saturday at 07:58 Share Posted Saturday at 07:58 @02:45, this morning, and in the doghouse with SWMBO, I found him again, he is Lt- Col Lancelot Fox Clarke killed 25 April 1915, at Gallipoli after climbing the Sphinx to get to Russell Top. He had commanded the 12th Battalion ashore about an hour before and was the first Battalion commander to be kia. Back to bed for a bit extra shut eye…….doubtful. @Bob Davies, what’s this about a moderator, just picked that out and spotted avatar….best be careful on the music thread😂

One, if not the oldest Gallipoli Lander. An interesting character hence why I picked him. He was killed whilst writing down information in a notebook, his batman was also killed. I believe the Adjutant was wounded trying to get to his body.

Best Wishes All, Bob. A Witter as a Moderator? Whatever next? There have been a few times of friction between the two: notably, the Great Skindles Standoff of 2014. And now, a Witter has become a Mod! A poacher turned gamekeeper, if you will. Anyway, who is this ? ? ?

He is a sniper named Georg Herrenreiter. Yes indeed. His story, and image, are here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Herrnreiter For those, possibly Wykehamists, who have no German, I’ve attached a translation of part of that page, courtesy of ‘Reverso’. The button on the back of the collar is the Gefreitenknopf (but the same button was used to denote any Gefreiter of any German state). Were there lacing on the collar and the button a bit larger it would be a sergeant, Vizefeldwebel, Feldwebel or Offizierstellverteter depending on additional signs of rank.
