Been in self imposed exile, but been watching, pretty sure that I found @tankengine888 chap yesterday, stupidly didn’t make a note and I can’t remember his name, it’s a slightly strange one  I’ll have a pitch at Lieutenant-Colonel Fox Dark or something like that, died 1915 iirc.

That's your hint @Bob Davies, hopefully sufficient.

Congrats on moderator by the way.

@02:45, this morning, and in the doghouse with SWMBO, I found him again, he is Lt- Col Lancelot Fox Clarke killed 25 April 1915, at Gallipoli after climbing the Sphinx to get to Russell Top. He had commanded the 12th Battalion ashore about an hour before and was the first Battalion commander to be kia.

Back to bed for a bit extra shut eye…….doubtful.

@Bob Davies, what’s this about a moderator, just picked that out and spotted avatar….best be careful on the music thread😂

Lieutenant Colonel Lancelot Fox Clarke is correct. One, if not the oldest Gallipoli Lander. An interesting character hence why I picked him.

He was killed whilst writing down information in a notebook, his batman was also killed. I believe the Adjutant was wounded trying to get to his body.

A Witter as a Moderator? Whatever next? There have been a few times of friction between the two: notably, the Great Skindles Standoff of 2014. And now, a Witter has become a Mod! A poacher turned gamekeeper, if you will.

Anyway, who is this ? ? ?

I am seeing Bavarian buttons and and Iron cross, so a German soldier is about as far as I have got.

I hope not to 'upset the apple cart' Uncle George.

‘Poacher turned gamekeeper’ is nothing more than a clue. But congrats - now we have a man on the inside! A fifth columnist, as it were. (This is not a clue, by the way.)

Cheers UG :D  That made me smile!

Your clue lead me straight to him.

He is a sniper named Georg Herrenreiter.

Yes indeed. His story, and image, are here:

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Herrnreiter

For those, possibly Wykehamists, who have no German, I’ve attached a translation of part of that page, courtesy of ‘Reverso’. And here’s something from Reddit.com:

A bit of a non-WiT question-

Is it common to see epaulette buttons on the collar (as seen on the quoted WiT photo)?

Sorry mate - haven’t a clue. Perhaps an expert, @GreyC maybe, might be able to help.

A Bavarian Gefreiter to be precise.

The button on the back of the collar is the Gefreitenknopf (but the same button was used to denote any Gefreiter of any German state).

Were there lacing on the collar and the button a bit larger it would be a sergeant, Vizefeldwebel, Feldwebel or Offizierstellverteter depending on additional signs of rank.

Maybe of interest:

Sergeantenbutton:
ø 29 mm tolerance + 1,5 mm.

Gefreitenbutton :
ø 25 mm tolerance  ± 0,50 mm.

Did rather slip my mind.

Thanks for all this! Very interesting- I thought it was an epaulette button for a short-shouldered man, but evidently not!

Happy birthday to you. It must be my birthday too because I think I know this one.

I'll let it run for now, so someone else can get first prize.
