Joint effort (and that's over egging my contribution). You did all the leg work. And I still have no idea why Pete thought I'd be particularly taken by this chap

David has it in a Royal Berkshire photo finish from Mr K. Prince Antônio Gastão Filipe Francisco de Assis Maria Miguel Gabriel Rafael Gonzaga de Orléans e Bragança it is in the full Portuguese, as he was the grandson of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil. Through his father he was great grandson of the last king of France, Louis Philippe. He was born in Paris, served in the Austro-Hungarian cavalry before the war but was barred from serving France due to his royal connections. He therefore joined the Canadian forces, was seconded to the RFC where he won the MC. He was killed just after the armistice in what is now suburban north London, but was interred in the Royal Chapel at Dreux west of Paris, which must be the CWGC's most aristocratic site.

As to why I held him back I thought it would be a good one to mark the return to first team action of one of the team stalwarts, so it is nice that you got it, with huge plaudits to the other half of the Berkshire posse of course.

Pete.

I believe he removed the feathers from his hat and made himself a  comfy pillow so that he could have a kip, thereby failing to capitalise on the Sulva invasion. Sacked shortly afterwards. He is General Stopford.

Have fun.

I knew for sure I had previously posted him, so I recharged my old phone and searched through my files till I found him.

Dim of me not to pick up on Knotty's clue. He clearly also  knew who he was.

I think as a Newbury man  Knotty might bridle at that title . I reckon Berkshire posse is safer!

Here's one we had earlier (much earlier). It was during what PG Wodehouse would probably have called "The great Google Face Recognition Imbroglio".

I find it a haunting image of the effects of war. It's a good time of year to put him up again. But who is he?

David, I’m pretty well up on Cruttwell, and know about this chap so I will butt out.

There is a hint of the look of the Guynemer one. Haven't got a clue who it is of course, so no change there then.

Absolutely. Like Guynemer this chap was a national hero, but unlike him it was for his pre war exploits, rather than his military career, which was, in truth, limited and completely unexceptional, ended almost before it had begun by a sniper's bullet during a night time working party in Plugstreet

Another sudden lightbulb moment. I've visited his grave on more than one occasion but I don't think I've seen him in uniform before........

Almost incredible to think Guynemer was barely 21 when this picture was taken. My chap is 25

Well gentlemen I think we need to be coy no longer. Would one of you like to name him?

Enough of my affairs, it doesn't interest many if any.

French and quite a few gongs, correct? No doubt a Legion D'honnuer [beg pardon on the spelling]...

England rugby captain (the other game not the real one), Ronald Poulton-Palmer.

Did some work with the RFU about three Ilkley men who had played for England pre-war including the mighty John Abbott King one of the all time greats of English rugby who had played with Palmer

King was KiA on The Somme in 1916 next to his great frien lancelot Slocock another former England captain who both served with the L’pool Scots

Another 1/4th Berks was one of the Gathorne-Hardy’s, his cousin is named on Ilkley War memorial. They had owned the Low Moor Iron Works in Bradford. However, like a lot of local industrialists headed south at the first opportunity.

Was going to use J A King as a Wit but here he is for free
