My girl joined up originally by using a man's name. She came out of the war disabled.

That must be the Serbian lady Sofija Jovanović, with all those medals on show.
Didn’t she loose part of her leg? , I believe she lived to ripe old age.

Yes. The first female Serbian combatant. Called La Jeanne d'Arc Serbe (The Serbian Joan of Arc) by French newspapers; thus the Orleans connection.

She managed to convince the authorities to let her join a Chetnik unit during both Balkan Wars. "I want a rifle and a war schedule! - she said firmly. - I won't leave here without a rifle. If I falter or fear the task, kill me... All my men are at war, I will not sit at home either. - Good, girl! - said the major to her. - You can't go to the front, but we can take you as a nurse. To see the wounds of heroes...- I want a gun! - she repeated. - For nurses, take older ones. I also want to beat the Turks!"

She joined the Serbian Army under the male name Sofronije Jovanović immediately upon the start of World War I. In July 1914, as part of the Srem Volunteer Detachment, she commanded the first group of Serbian fighters who crossed the Sava to Srem to reconnoiter enemy positions and cut telephone wires to Zemun.

She was wounded in the war, lost part of her foot and became disabled. She received 13 decorations for heroism. She died in 1979 . and was buried with military honors at the New Cemetery in Belgrade.

Ah damn it. Still an interesting character. Finished my bit of square bashing and stressing the Sergeant out.

I WISH!

Has the voice of a typical SM, yells loud enough to be heard in America, does his drill to perfection and so on... I managed to anger a whole platoon as Right Marker by marching too fast! Bearing in mind that I'm taller than most of them..

Zidane.

Perfectly understandable old boy. Sometimes we have to do the right thing by ourselves. :)

For the second time now I immediately recognised someone whom I had previously posted, but again although I recognise his face I just can't remember who he is. Not surprising really I suppose given that we must each have posted hundreds of pictures.

Still infuriating though.

Oh dear Steve😀, another clue, plenty of pictures and he had some of his awards rescinded but nobody can give a definitive answer as to why, did he upset HRH?

Is this Ernest Brooks, the war photographer? (If so then the Berkshire posse strikes again)

A quick one for @David Ridgus:

How do you console an English teacher?

There their they're.

Some of my po-faced ex colleagues would have sniffed and said, 'You've left out the commas'!

But I was never more than an amateur English teacher so I think that's brilliant. Now if you have any jokes about History or Economics teachers ....

The only one that comes to mind is the history teacher who walks into a bar, holds up two fingers and says "Five beers please".

I can hear the groans from here; I'll close the door on my way out...

Well presuming my Ernest Brooks punt is a winner, who is this chap.

I thought he might be the first in an occasional series, 'I'm a writer, not and a fighter'

Well done with Brooks, by the way. I must now go and check if I actually did post him before or whether I might qualify for a discount from my next insurance renewal with confused.com.
