Well presuming my Ernest Brooks punt is a winner, who is this chap.

I thought he might be the first in an occasional series, 'I'm a writer, not and a fighter'

David

Is he Charles Peguy?

The only one that comes to mind is the history teacher who walks into a bar, holds up two fingers and says "Five beers please".

I don’t get it.

Roman numerals. No worries, it is a terrible joke. ;)

It's not Peguy UG but their physical resemblance is quite marked. My chap survived the Great War but not the Second World War

I personally think he is like the Ukraine president Zelenskyy

I do apologise David, I’ve been a bit busy so I didn’t read the whole thing and I missed the comment.

I must admit the “Berkshire Posse” does have a ring to it 😀

Just realised that your chap is in a French uniform.

As long as nobody says we'll head them off at the pass. I hate that cliché. You could be the Royal County Massive as an alternative.

To be more specific then, his writing was historical and hugely influential

Not Jean Giraudoux, I take it.

Fiction or non-fiction?

No, although again the physical resemblance is marked. (I think we may be getting into Robert Nivelle lookalike territory here)

Non-fiction

On reflection I think this whole series could be on French writers. I had not heard of Charles Peguy, and although I did know Giraudoux's works I had no idea he had such a strong war record. As always with WIT, I learn all the time

Would you accept "We'll head them off just outside Thatcham"?

As an aside on the photo thread has anyone got the ID of those bloody steps of Michelle’s?

Is he Marc Bloch?

He is indeed UG, well done. I am almost disappointed, but only because I was enjoying finding out about these other folk.

Marc Bloch, founder of the Annales school of history, almost certainly the most influential historical movement of the 20th Century, as well as fighting all the way through the Great War, and being shot as a member of the Resistance in the Second. When I was at University it was the dominant force, and you questioned it at your peril. These days not so much but its influence is everywhere in the best historical writing. It is sometimes argued that the reverence in which he is held as an historian in France owes quite a bit to his astonishing bravery outside of Academia. Personally I think that is unkind - without Bloch, no Braudel, without Braudel the best history book of the century isn't written.

So its the interception part of the process you object to, rather than its location

I just got there with Bloch too. WW1 French historian killed Ww2 found him.

Terrible end to his life. Aside from his acedemic achievements and contributions, what a remarkably brave man he was.

No. I am with Hedley Lamarr (that's Hedley) in rejecting the whole. Comic effect can be gained by interpolation of Royal Berkshire placenames into famous Western ideas, as in the shootout at the Old Windsor corral but I draw the line at anything to do with heading off and passes.

Quite. We do have standards after all.
