Too young by the death cert - we'd be looking at a man born 1883/4 1885/86

Okay-32 1/2 in 1918? Gives 1886-so I'm still wrong!

Tom, may I be so bold as to ask you and your panel of experts to consider if the following gentleman should be put forward for CWGC recognition?

Peter McHugh, born 14/5/1880 Dooey, County Donegal. Father was Denis McHugh, mother was Hannah (Molloy) McHugh.

In 1901 census he is recorded as aged 22, a fisherman.

In 1911 census he is recorded as being a crew member on board the Marchioness of Lorne.

He died on 20/8/1919 in the Combination Hospital,Gateside, Gourock, Scotland. His occupation is given as 2nd Engineer, HM Minesweeper Marchioness of Breadalbane, and cause of death is recorded as Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

He qualified for the British war medal and the Victory medal but there is no record they were ever issued.

Th UK Naval Medal and Award Rolls identifies him as a Royal Naval Reserve Officer but the actual Medal Roll identifies him as a Mercantile Marine Reserve Officer.

He is buried in St Bridget's cemetery, Toome, Lettermacaward, County Donegal.

His wife/NOK was Susan (Rodgers) McHugh.

Thank you.

Paul.

This is al I have on him. I did not know where he was buried, thank you for that information.

McHugh, Peter. (Donegal). Engineer. Mercantile Marine Reserve. Marchioness of Breadalbane (Paddle Minesweeper).

Date of

Death: 20/08/1919.

Born: Lettermacaward, County Donegal.

Death: Died of pulmonary tuberculosis at Combintaion Hospital, Gourock, Scotland.

Next of kin, etc: Husband of Susan McHugh.

Cemetery: Unknown.

Have you got his records? If you have, depending on what he was discharged with he may qualify.

I don't have his records but I will gladly purchase them if someone could supply me with (easy to follow) details of how to do so. My gut feeling is that he was still serving on the ship and went directly from the ship to hospital,so to speak, where he subsequently died.

Hi Paul,

Finding records of naval personnel is a bit of a black art, and a bit of a mystery to us landlubbers.

As I understand it , there are about 3 or 4 drifferent naval series of records that can searched, under the ADM prefix (Army records are under WO, ad air force under AIR).

There are service records for sailors held at the National Archive and the index can be searched for free:

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

I have to tell you though, that searching for 'ADM Peter McHugh' hasn't brought up anything on my searches.

Perhaps a proper naval expert can better advise us on where to go next.

That looks like Edward Ellesmere to me Tom.
