I like your thinking, thank you David.

Here is all I have at the moment.

  • Carlow 19/03/1915, occupation on enlistment-groom.
  • Next of Kin: A single man. Brother of Mary Moran, Fair Green, Tullow, County Carlow. Mary's marriage cert in 1890 gives her fathers name as Andrew Brien, labourer, Barrack Street, Carlow. His mother Anne Brien, nee McDarby died at Tullow Green, on 18/11/1892 from diabetes aged 63.
  • Grave or Memorial: Ford Cemetery in Liverpool
  • Notes: Also served in the Boer War with the Dragoons of the Line, 1st Dragoon Guards. In his Boer War records his age on discharge is given as 41 in 1906. On discharge he was going to work as a Railway Porter and lived at 348 Westminster Road, Kirkdale, Liverpool

What do you make of this please?

Looks like this man, probably just an error with the name and service number:

I am trying to ascertain if these two are the same man, can you help please?

I would say so. He's on my list so I've looked at him before, but I wasn't able to make a case for commemoration.

Hmmm, the date of death on the pension card matches the DC, and if he was 51 in 1920 that means he was born around 1869. But according to that service record, he enlisted in 1876 age 17, so born around 1859. However, date of discharge on the pension card (18/1/1888) is the same as the service record, and I don't see any evidence that he served after that date. I'd suggest that it's the same man but with an incorrect age on the DC.

Same age in 1901 and 1911, assuming it's the same man. Maybe he shaved 10 years off his age when he remarried?

I've checked Ancestry and they have a burial record for Thomas Donohoe at Frimley (St. Peter) Churchyard in Surrey, age 21 and buried on 11 Jan 1916. Seems to correspond to Ivor's death record above.

A couple of people have been in touch with me via Find-a-Grave to say that he isn't in any of the church records at Frimley. That contradicts the burial register on Ancestry, so I don't know. There doesn't appear to be a headstone for him in any case. Perhaps one for the CWGC to sort out if things go that far.

Burial was at Ford Cemetery in Liverpool on 11/3/1918, he died at Victoria Central Hospital, Wallasey, and appears to have a private grave. I'll look for a headstone next time I'm there just in case.

I found the grave for Andrew Brian (plot 2A.180) and there is a small headstone there, but no inscription for your man. The only names are Michael Connaughey (died 1905, age 50) and Annie Connaughey (died 1912, age 62). Presumably they were relatives, and I'm guessing brother and sister rather than husband and wife. Annie appears to have been working as a domestic servant in 1901 and 1911, I can't find much on Michael but both appear to have been born in Liverpool.
