Grove Town Cemetery at sunset.

This was the one cemetery I was determined to visit and pay my respects to Serjeant Major John Chalmers MC, DCM, 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles. Thanks Willy.

Chalmers was awarded the DCM during the Boer war, and the MC for his handling of the battalion (or what was left of it) after the Battle of Neuve Chappelle.

Obviously a brave man, but also hugely respected by everyone in the Regiment, officers and men alike. An officer of the Regiment, who joined in the late 40s, told me of how Chalmers was even a topic of much discussion when he was in the Regiment.

He was shot by a sniper on the 21st October 1916 and died on the 24th.

The inscription on the base of his headstone reads:

'There is a link death cannot sever

Love and Remembrance last forever'

Dear Namesake,

Whilst I am flattered by your kind offer, I don't think my wife would approve!

:D
