Found in the plough soil off the sunken road, what is it & when ??? 2inches high approx

I think this is a morphine ampoule. This should be handled with extreme care. I personally would not touch it without gloves.

This should explain the importance of this now 'forest' fort.

Even though these are all open, you do not want to go in there.Very dangerous places even to a caver.

This chateau d'eau has been photographed many times but,its not until your standing beside it that you find it so surprising its still standing sfter all these years! Its taken hits by several different sized shells & shows signs of small arms fire too.

The prongs look short but, this is German wire on the line the closest to Verdun that they got.

Monument to Maginot himself(he of line fame)who was wounded here very early in the war.

After that is the Verdun memorial.

Theses are for Barrie so you can make a comparison between Lorette & the national cemetary of Verdun.

This place takes up a lot more room than NDdL but, there are 8000 less graves here!

& inside the bunker shaped memorial.

You remember the osuaries at Lorette?Under the floor here are the bones of 130,000 unknown French troops. They can be seen from the small windows outside but,Im not posting photos of that.

Aussiechris,'

it would be a long day but its no problem to do it. Have undertaken the trip many times myself. Ideally you would need your own car to make the most of your time.

If you need a suggested route let me know.

59165,

Yes please, a simple day trip

thanks

Shirley

59165 Brilliant photos

Last Verdun photos, hope they have been a help to those that cant get there.

This is the last fort I visited,Froide Terre or Cold Earth & that just about sums it up.

This place never fell & helped to support Souville in its struggle.

While admiring the defenders as I do,you really have to admire the attackers for their tenacity & courage in probably the biggest hot spot of the war where princes & generals fought each other over a town that,if it had fallen, would have probably lost the war for the allies.Lots of debate there I suppose!

Bienvenue à Cold Earth.A very cold spot indeed.
