Number 15 on a list of 26 Canadian Nobel prize winners:

Lester Bowles "Mike" Pearson.

(Thought it was Banting at first, who was second on the list.)

You have him sir, theseĀ Canadians have a habit of throwing up some interesting Great War personalities, Lester B Pearson 14th President of Canada, with a ā€œcolourfulā€ military career.

Sorry about the delay in replying, was watching that ChannelĀ 4 programme Ā ā€œThe Unrememberedā€, itā€™s created a bit of a sh*tstorm in the CWGC. It appears that they have had no input or redress to the allegations that there should be no commemorations givenĀ to native Africans that gave their lives in the Great War.

Mind you a programme presented by an existing MP (suspended for the duration),is something to be taken with a pinch of saltšŸ˜

I watched that.Ā

Shocking and shameful in my opinion. 50% mortality rate makes you think too, though that estimate wasn't consistent throughout the programme. Also, it was presented very much a la politician, first claiming that there were no memorials at all, when in fact there areĀ (few as they are). On the whole though, it was very uncomfortable viewing from a British, and supposedly christian point of view.

Sorry to be picky, but Canada doesn't have a President: it has (currently) a Queen. Pearson was the 14th Prime Minister of Canada.

I am not Marilyne, but Diane Atkinson's 'Elsie and Mairi go to war' is worth reading.

Given the scary blizzard pictures you posted and Dai's suggestion that it was somewhere in Wales would we be on the right track?

Pete.

Great minds think alike, G.H.

That said, we could well both be wrong of course.

Seems like the suffragettes had marched back to barracks and placed themselves into the Z reserve,Ā Ā well before his nibs moved into this house.Ā  My mistake.

Chinese Chipp

My hometown used to have a Chinese Chippy. They bought a local Fish and Chip emporium and expanded the menu into the Chinese food to run alongside.

Sorry I answer only now, I must have missed your postā€¦ things are a bit busy here at the coordination cellā€¦

To answer the question, there are a couple of works that deserve attention:

  • Christine Hallett's other book "Veiled Warriors"
  • Elisabeth shipton "Female Tommies"
  • Penny Starns "Sisters of the Somme"
  • Samatha Philo gill: the Women's army Auxiliary Corps in France

And then is a great number of memoirs that are not only very enjoyable to read but also very informative;

  • Olive Dent: "A volunteer nurse at the front"
  • Edith Appleton: "a nurse at the front" (ed by ruth Cowen)
  • Beatrice Hopkinson: "Nursing through shot and shell" (Ed by vivien Newman)
  • Dorothea Crewdson: "Dorothea's war"
  • Mary Borden: "The Forbidden zone"
  • Kate Luard: "Unknown warriors"

These are the main works I've been reading for my project on the women buried on the Western front.

What is interesting to see is that a lot of the nurses who wrote their memoirs are somehow familiar with the tragedies and some knew the victims intimately.

You were!

I don't know about the balustrade but the bay window upstairs, supported by the colonnade, was designed by Clough Williams-Ellis. Portmeirion is just down the road.
