Knotty Posted 7 December , 2019 Share Posted 7 December , 2019 Hi Ron (been out all day so not able to be on the ball with answering) Yes that him Herbert Sulzbach, author of “With the German Guns” as a Captain he was stationed in and around the Somme for 50 months, earning both the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. He fled Germany in 1937 because of persecution and ended up in the U.K. In 1939 he enlisted in the army Pioneer Corps and became a commissioned officer. Because of his work in PoW camp he was awarded medals of merit as well as the WW2 defence medal etc. and in recognition for his work with prisoners he was awarded an OBE. See this link. http://www.bbc.co.uk/ahistoryoftheworld/objects/CuUXMj93RIGkxwCJVRZSEA Not much on the internet as a biography, best to just google his name and read the articles

Gunner Hall Posted 8 December , 2019 Share Posted 8 December , 2019 (edited) Curses. He's a dead ringer for the photo on Koestler's books, who was also a Pioneer. Well played Ron. Sounds like a chap who should be celebrated more. Edited 8 December , 2019 by Gunner Hall

Gunner Hall Posted 10 December , 2019 Share Posted 10 December , 2019 Would he be the 27th prime minister of New Zealand, Walter Nash?
Knotty Posted 10 December , 2019 Share Posted 10 December , 2019 (edited) Hi Gunner H (there are several another gunner so just clarifying👍) No not Nash, nor any other Antipodean (which makes a change). And I apologise for not replying to you last WIT, missed your reply as it came after Ron’s answer and I was put straight on to an empty page, I should have looked back, I didn’t have a clue what #12503 referred to. Gunner Hall Posted 10 December , 2019 Share Posted 10 December , 2019 I'd previously had a guess at it being Arthur Koestler - an author who did serve in the RPC. I've sent more of his books to pulping than i care to remember.
neverforget Posted 10 December , 2019 Share Posted 10 December , 2019 Is it Louis Tolley, though I can't find any great war references?
Knotty Posted 10 December , 2019 Share Posted 10 December , 2019 No not Tolley NF, as I said his roots came from Kiddy, not him necessarily 😁

Gunner Hall Posted 11 December , 2019 Share Posted 11 December , 2019 "his roots came from Kiddy, not him necessarily" Fiendish. Not sure if carpets constitute "roots", but is it George Bain Carpet designer and Great war Sapper. 2 minutes ago, Knotty said: Springbok👍 Damn. Not wee Georgie Bain then,. neverforget Posted 11 December , 2019 Share Posted 11 December , 2019 South African politician, father from Kiddy, brings up a Herbert Guest?
Knotty Posted 11 December , 2019 Share Posted 11 December , 2019 Your slightly out there NF, but I will give that one to you, just a generation out.😁 His grandfather was from Kiddy, his father was Herbert, but I was actually after Ernest Lucas Guest. (1882-1972) He was a very distinguished politician, and made rank of Lt Col. Active service in the 2nd Boer War (underaged) and in Africa and France during the GW. During WW2 he was minister for Air and was instrumental in establishing the SAAF. He lost 2 sons in WW2. Nice little read here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Lucas_Guest

Hi Gunner H Not him (see above), but I’m surprised with all these obscure names your coming up with, you don’t have us going round in circles try to find answers.👍😀 What say the rest of WIT’ers Edited 11 December , 2019 by Knotty
neverforget Posted 11 December , 2019 Share Posted 11 December , 2019 To be honest, and to confirm my ignorance even further than it has been confirmed many times before, it's been a while since I've heard of any the WIT characters. Not too surprising really, considering all of the well known, and not so well known faces we've seen on here over the years. That's the beauty of the thread though; it makes learning fun. I can't claim that last one either John, despite your generous gesture, but at least I got a little closer than I usually do, and I'm happy to settle for that.😊
Gunner Hall Posted 11 December , 2019 Share Posted 11 December , 2019 (edited) Well I'm setting myself up for another fail, here, It'll be about 30 seconds before someone spots this chap who merely was in the wrong place at the wrong time. he wasn't actually needed either as the principals brought their own flunky. He was born in 1886 BTW. Edited 11 December , 2019 by Gunner Hall
Knotty Posted 11 December , 2019 Share Posted 11 December , 2019 I have assumed he is Austro-Hungarian by the look of his uniform And I think he looks like young Archduke Karl Albrecht of Austria, but I would have thought he would have more scrambled egg on show, and his headgear doesn’t ring true. Knotty Posted 12 December , 2019 Share Posted 12 December , 2019 Take it all back, not an Archduke at all, but the chauffeur of Archduke Frank Ferdinand, name of Leopold Lojka , just a little error of identification on my behalf.🤪 It appears that he should not have been driving the car in which FF was assassinated as the Archduke had brought his own driver. Link to the story below.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leopold_Lojka This is who I was confusing him with, Archduke Karl Albrecht.
Gunner Hall Posted 12 December , 2019 Share Posted 12 December , 2019 Apologies for the late reply, Knotty strikes again. Leopold Lojka it is. The local govenor of the province actually made him write letters of apology to The Emperor, The Archdukes Children and to the Kaiser. - despite the fact that the journey plans had been changed at the last minute and that he merely followed the rest of the convoy down the wrong street. Somebody had to be responsible, i suppose.
