Indeed he is.  That’s not quite in the same league though Jerry 😉

thanks.

I wondered if they were new recruits, older conscripts or volunteers, maybe friends

Yes, I’d already corrected my error and we must all have been typing simultaneously.

All the AGS badged officers were commissioned rankers, so they would be less likely to have well tailored uniforms.  He also wears the white shirt and black, ribbed silk tie that was originally authorised for service dress with the new, stepped rever, in 1913.

The main AGS school was in 3rd Army’s rear area so that’s a clue to the location of the photo.  The officer shown could almost certainly be named.

I took a breather, yes, I believe we're all typing simultaneously ha ha.

Interesting about the AGS Officer, I didn't know they were all ex rankers.

There appears to be some strange characters in the group?

Do you think it's a concert party?

Or just some soldiers messing around?

Concert party is my vote -- the fellow with the (fake?) beard looks like actor Shylock who's photo was posted earlier.

On Page 318, post 7936.

Ah yes, good spot, so was the AGS Officer in charge of the concert party then?

These are great photos!

Possibly Kitchener volunteers, but apart from K1 units they (K2 and K3) did not have khaki uniform for quite some time.  Their age and general demeanour suggest newly recruited TF to me (probably 3rd line) , but of course we cannot be sure in the absence of insignia.

Yes, a concert party. The AGS were specifically placed in charge of “Recreational Training”, which incorporated mainly boxing and football, but perhaps a concert party was included at 3rd Army.

Don't worry Jerry I'm always putting my foot in it but it's good fun. With an extremely knowledgeable crowd.

Around 1903-4 he is wearing the QSA.

Not sure if the other means is a sniper with the s in between two rifles.

A sharpshooter or a unit of the Army Cycling Corps.

Yes, I think BRC, and the chap with GS badge either Labour Corps or a VB after conversion from VTC and before regimental badges were adopted.

Other then India I'm not sure of the unit.

Wiltshire Regiment wore that distinctive Maltese Cross as their pagri flash.  I’m fairly sure that it’s the 2/4th TF battalion sent out to garrison India.

All three B&W photos nice shots of Cyclist battalions personnel.

The chap on his own in the head and shoulders shot and wearing collar badges is a Canadian.

I don’t think that it’s an ‘S’ but a crown above the crossed rifles, Roy, which makes it a musketry prize badge.

The problem with that is the sleeve used. The SNCOs of the best shooting company/ squadron wore the badge there. Unit musketry best shots on the left.

Not to say that it is being worn correctly of course.

Yes I think it’s just being worn on the wrong sleeve.  Not for the first time, I’ve seen another too.
