Paul, I am sending what I have on Hilda Ayre-Smith directly to you. My notes say that she worked in a Red Cross Hospital. If she worked in a military hospital under military laws she would no doubt be eligible. The CWGC are aware of her and unless their criteria has changed she will not come under their care. I understand that her grave is unmarked.

I contacted St Peters Church, Eastgate, about when it might be possible to photograph anything inside the Church

"Thank you for your enquiry. The church is usually open Tuesday and Wednesday 9-3pm also Sundays 9 to 12pm should you wish to call any time. "

Jim, today I received an email from someone who is compiling a Parish History for St Peter in Eastgate in Lincoln. He has included a couple of photos, and has offered to take better photos if needed. If you PM me your email address, I can forward my email, and then you can contact him directly with your requirements.

Jim, I have been sent high resolution photographs of the two womens headstones in Kantara War Memorial Cemetery, Lilian Elaine McPhail and Gwladys Margaret Thomas, both Aussies.

Would you like me to email them to you as posting them on here will reduce resolution and file size.

Hi Jim, I'm heading over to North Wales during the bank holiday and might be tempted to do Pwllheli and Penmorfa. Do you know if Kathleen Hugheston Roberts has a headstone at St Bueno's churchyard?

Hello Paul, Kathleen Augusta Hugheston Roberts does have a grave marker in St. Bueno's churchyard. I have a photograph of it (always happy to take another). It currently comprises four pedestals which at one time had a cross on the top which now is gone. She is shown as Kathleen A. Roberts, V.A.D.

Finally a headstone for Eliza Willis Jim. Unfortunately the sun was awkward when I took the photo. I have sent them via we transfer but can go back and photograph again if you like

Thank you, Wayne. Safely received. I suppose strictly speaking there should be one headstone to include both Eliza and her son. They were buried on top of each other rather than side by side. But that is me being pedantic. Anyway, I much appreciate your getting the photograph.

Released by the CWGC today on social media

A rededication service is to be held at 11am in Manchester Southern Cemetery on Friday 2nd September to honour a nurse with a new CWGC headstone.

Nurse Hilda Florence Letitia Peare, born in 1894, in Co Wexford, Ireland, nursed sick and wounded soldiers at Manchester’s 2nd Western General Hospital during the First World War. She sadly died of Scarlet Fever contracted on duty in 1917, aged 23.

Her funeral was described in The Free Press in March 1917 “Her devotion to duty was fully appreciated and was evident from the remarkable demonstration of regret on the occasion of her internment. She was buried with full military honours, the gun carriage and the firing party being supplied by the Commanding Officer of Heaton Park Depot. ”

We are honoured to now mark her grave with a Commission headstone bearing her name, rank and Voluntary Aid Detachment insignia, and will care for her resting place in perpetuity.

The service has been organised by the CWGC and will be attended by CWGC staff, member of the local council, Royal British Legion and a representative from the Irish consulate. Members of the press and public are welcome to attend.

And they have already added a photo of the new headstone just for you Jim304780865_10159208972636094_9058692025216480944_n.jpg.18390f86585756f928ef1bf03bdf16d0.jpg

I thought you had got the Lincoln one now

Still to get in Lincolnshire

LINCOLN  -  Beatrice Mary HODGSON, VAD, died 29th December 1919. There is a remembrance tablet in a church (unknown) but we suspect that it is St. Peters church where there is a commemorative window and where she is buried (both of which I have).

MUMBY  -  Hilda and Mildred Bessie ROBERTSHAW, VADs, died 13th September 1920. They are buried in St. James churchyard and commemorated on the lychgate there (I have both). But there is beleived to be a plaque to the two sisters within the church.

SAUSTHORPE  -  Ethel, SWAN, VAD, died 28th February 1916. Buried in St. Andrew churchyard. Said to be a two step granite cross.

SCOTHERN  -   Charlotte FOX, munition worker, died 5th December 1916, buried in St. Germain churchyard. I have a Find A Grave one but need one to overcome copyright issues.

WALCOT  -  Lucy Marian THURLBY, VAD, died 10th September 1919. Buried in Walcot but cemetery/churchyard currently unknown. It is quite a small village so likely to be in St. Nicholas churchyard.

WELL  -  Mary HASNIP, VAD, died 10th December 1919. There are two individual plaque in her memory in St. Margarets Church.

WILLOUGHBY  -  Harriet SALES, VAD, died 1921. She is buried in St. Helena's churchyard (may be unmarked as a previous look failed to find her).
