I've arrange to see the grave of Ethel Swift next Wednesday. The church tell me there is no inscription on the grave but I'll look for myself as it may be buried or something. I've sent you via we transfer the grave photos from Chesterfield of Anne Fletcher

Thank you, Wayne. Much appreciated. Ann Fletcher did well considering her mother was not even able to sign her own name. As an aside it looks like your Barnsley and my Derby County will still be playing each other next season.

Liverpool, Kirkdale  -  Laura Marion GAILEY, VAD, died 24th March 1917, is buried in Kirkdale Cemetery, section Gen. 7, grave 1433.  Also Rebecca SOMERVILLE, VAD, died 16th February 1919, is buried in Kirkdale Cemetery, section 5, plot 1114. She is buried with husband, William Somerville, and his second wife, Frances Somerville. Also buried in Kirkdale Cemetery is Dorothy May WILLIAMSON, VAD, died 9th October 1918 but unfortunatly I have no plot number.

Already posted the other two, this is the umarked grave of Rebecca Sommerville (roughly in the centre of the photo, two forward and one to the right of the Commission headstone in the background).

I've sent photos of sister Ethel Swift's grave in Fulwood via we transfer. I had to dig the base out as it was completely buried. I've had a word with my friend from the in from the cold project and he thinks that she wouldn't be eligible for a CWGC headstone as she died of flu in England. Nonetheless I have sent for her death certificate. I am hoping that it says something on there that helps.

Thank you, Wayne. Safely received. As you will know, the The Sheffield Daily Telegraph reported :- "NURSE'S DEVOTION. Tributes to the Late Sister. The high place which Sister Ethel Swift of Sheffield, held in the affections of all who knew her was abundantly shown at her funeral, which took place yesterday. Sister Swift had a remarkably varied experience of war nursing, and it was while in Afghanistan that she contracted the illness that was probably the prime cause of her death.  Hopefully the death certificate will confirm but I know that the IFTC people hold no store on newspaper reports as they form opinion rather than fact. So the death certificate is a must.

Sorry. An error picked up from St. John Ambulance.

The First Aid and The St. John Ambulance Gazette for January 1919, page 99, has an obituary that reads :- "NORTH CITY - We much regret to announce the death from septic pneumonia following influenza of Nursing Sister Wilkinson, St. Stephen's Green Nursing Division. Her remains were laid to rest at St. Jerome Cemetery. The Brigade was represented by Lady District Officer Miss E.F. Blandford, Lady Divisional Supts. Mrs Rowlette, Mrs Woodward and Mrs O'Kelly; Nursing Officers Mrs Graham-Corbett and Miss Bertha Irwin, Members of the St. Stephen's Green Nursing Division and Ambulance Officer Horne. Members of the City of Dublin Ambulance Division acted as Pall Bearers, while the Nursing Sisters laid beautiful wreaths on their comrades' grave".

I have just spent a happy hour looking through this excellent website :- https://www.igp-web.com/IGPArchives/ire/dublin/photos/tombstones/1mj/mt-jerome63.htm

Lots of Wilkinsons but could not find Eileen.

She died 21 Nov 1918 but surprisingly, I can't find a death notice for her in the Irish Times. Anyway, I'll keep my eyes peeled next time I am in Mt Jerome.

Liverpool, Ford Cemetery - Mary TAYLOR, munition worker, died 16th March 1918 and is buried in plot 107. If no headstone a photograph of the plot with a background landmark required.

Re-checked the burial registers and Mary Taylor is buried in public section SJ. There are no headstones in any of the public areas so it would not be possible to pinpoint the exact plot, at least not without some help from the cemetery office. This is a view of that section looking west from the perimiter fence.

A new war memorial was installed at Euxton around 2015, and a booklet was produced at the same time. It's available online in pdf format: https://www.lfhhschorleybranch.com/uploads/1/0/4/7/10472435/euxton_remembers_2020.pdf

I fear that you are right. There was a suggestion that she had contracted malaria in Afghanistan and had been returned home to recover. But the death certificate shows otherwise (influenza). There is no BRCS record card for her as a VAD (not unusual) and I cannot see that she was a military nurse both of which would have helped make the case. As you have the information there is still nothing lost in bouncing the possibility off the In From The Cold team. I am happy to let them have the factual information from my records as to her background.

Jim, what do you need from Hatherlow in Cheshire?

Was looking over your wants for Devon (from an old post) since I may be out that way next month.

DAWLISH - An article in the Express suggests that a plaque for Margaret Jane Fortescue was added to the war memorial in 2018: Heroic nurse killed in World War 1 is remembered on 100th anniversary of her death | UK | News | Express.co.uk

PLYMOUTH - Lives of the First World War have a grave photo for Lilian Norah Pearce Life story: Lilian Norah Pearce | Lives of the First World War (iwm.org.uk)

I gather that Trinnette Taylor has since been removed from CWGC on account of not being a casualty?

DAWLISH  -  yes, it is the name of Margaret Fortescue, added to the war memorial, that I am after. As this is just up the coast from where I live it is one of those I can do myself (eventually) unless someone gets there first.

PLYMOUTH  -  I have looked at the link for Lilian Pearce but I can only see a photograph of her - not of her grave.

HATHERLOW, Cheshire  -  There is a plaque in Hatherlow United Reform Church with the name of Gertrude Mary Powicke on it.

Jim, I don't suppose you have a grave reference for Nellie Morris at Weaste? I know you don't need a photo, but I'm heading out that way over the weekend so will try and look out for it anyway.

I have a photograph of it but not an actual grave reference. The grave marker is rather distinct (tall and round) but amongst 332,000 graves spread over 39 acres you may need some binoculars and hiking boots.

I was in the Chapel in Mt Jerome today for a funeral service - I had never realised how large the actual cemetery is!   Interestingly, the Mt Jerome estate, famed for its beautiful landscaped gardens, fishponds and running streams, was  bought by a wealthy banking family, the Wilkinsons, in the early 1700s. The family sold it again in the 1780s and the son of that purchaser sold it to a cemetery company which had been formed by Robert Shaw, the son-in-law of the 'original' Wilkinson family - so the wheel had turned full circle. I will speak to some of the staff there and see can they give me any assistance in finding Eileen's grave.  Maybe she was related to the original Wilkinson family.
