A brilliant find, PaulC78. I now know her cause of death. A lot of IFs but if she had served in a military hospital and if the blood poisoning had been caused through her work she may have been eligible for CWGC commemoration. As it stands, not enough proof available to put forward.

Hi Jim, was up in Newcastle this weekend and managed to get some photos for Kate Elizabeth Ogg at St John's Westgate and Elswick Cemetery.

I haven't heard back from the people who could give me access to the Drumcondra grave (Eleanor Frances HILL) but I hope I will get to Glasnevin (MAHONY, PLUNKETT) and Grangegorman (WALLACE) before Christmas.

Hi Jim I see that Sheffield is off your list now does that mean you have the photos of P Banks in the Weslyan chapel Sharrow Vale?

Wayne, Thank you for bringing this up. I am sitting on the fence with this one. I have placed Miss P. Banks to one side for the time being as I don't think that she was a casualty of war. I think that the Sharrow Vale Road memorial is to remember all those that served from the congregation and not just those that died. I need to research her a bit more but without a first name this will probably take time and a lot of trawling through the 1911 census for the area. Having taken her out of my listing I could just as easily pop her back in. Thank you for providing the photograph which makes it a bit more likely that I will do so.

Thank you, Wayne, safely received. The centre of the memorial lists those that died and the rest, like Miss P. Banks, is amongst those that served. But I do appreciate your getting these photographs as it does help to clarify matters. I may still use them.

Jim - I had no luck yesterday afternoon. Although staff directed me to the general area in which the Mahony grave should be, I couldn't find it in the time I had.  When I asked about the Plunkett name on the War Memorial, the staff member seemed surprised at my question. The WW1 memorial I found is to the 'Officers, NCOs and MEN who served and died' and there is no Plunkett (male nor female) listed on it.  Do you know if there is another WW1 memorial in the cemetery?

When I came home, I did find a Plunkett online - is this the same person?

Sheila's name is recorded on the Glasnevin Cemetery War Memorial, Dublin. Her name is also mentioned on a memorial in the family plot in Glasnevin Cemetery and which reads "Sacred to the memory of Randal Plunkett of Bellview died 11th May 1852 and of his beloved son Alan Vincent Plunkett who died on the 4th of October 1857 aged 16 years. Cecil 5th May 1893 infant son of J. Randal and Cecilia Mary Plunkett. John Randal Plunkett died 14th April 1915 aged 65 years. Clara Punkett died 13th March 1916 aged 75 years. Sheelagh (sic) Isabel Mary youngest daughter of the above John Randal Plunkett drowned in the sinking of the S.S. Leinster 10th Oct. 1918, aged 21 years".

This information is shown here :- https://www.rmsleinster.com/people/PLUNKETT_Sheelah Isabel Mary.htm

The photograph here may help you to more easily find the headstone with her name on it :- https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/107499411/sheelah-isabel_mary-plunkett

This site states that she is buried in Glasnevin but I have no evidence that the body was recovered. I suspect that this is an error and muddled with the celebrated Grace Gifford Plunkett who is buried in the cemetery or, more likely, that her name, in absentia, is on the Randal Plunkett grave marker :- https://www.youwho.ie/plunkett.htmlhttps

As for the war memorial I have often found mention of men, but, nevertheless, have women listed. Unfortunately I have been unable to find a list of the names on the Glasnevin war memorial in question to confirm one way or the other.

This is the WW1 memorial I checked - names are inscribed alphabetically and there's definitely no Plunkett there. It also says the named are buried in the cemetery.  Maybe some other Dublin-based person can enlighten me as to the location of other WW1 memorials with the cemetery?

My version of the headstone dates back to 2005 and was taken by Chris Noble. It was in fairly good nick then but was recumbent on a wooden pallet.

Jim - I went back out to Glasnevin Cemetery today. It appears that Sheelah Plunkett was probably on the memorial to all those who died in conflict 1916-1918 - unfortunately that memorial has been removed permanently.  I didn't manage to get to family plot as it is in a very old part of the cemetery and would require a lot of time searching, which I didn't have.  Do you still need a photo of the family headstone?

monkstown, thankyou for the two sets of photographs provided. Yes, I still need a photograph of the family grave. Turning to the war memorial I have found this on FindAGrave.   https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/58442234/glasnevin_cemetery-war_memorial Since 2011 this has been located to the side of the Chapel. If I read the Find-A-Grave blurb correctly, after all of the names, there will be listed "Not listed by CWGC as War Casualties are,
12 persons.
4 of whom were drowned in the sinking of the
R.M.S. Leinster
on 10th October 1918, caused by two torpedoes from a German Submarine.
Rev. William Ildefonsus Campbell
Sheelagh I. M. Plunkett
Florence Mary Scroope
Elizabeth Susan Woodhouse

Nurse Edith Maud Cryan d. 10 Mar. 1919.
James Martin McCall d. 19 Mar. 1919.
Michael Francis Reilly d. 29 May 1918.
George Warfield d. 29 May 1917.

2 Munitions Workers
Mary Casey d. 11 Aug. 1917.
Margaret Mary Cullen d. 28 Oct. 1918".

There are six women here included Sheelagh I.M. Plumkett. Of additional interest to me are Anne Connor (panel 3), Marion O'Reilly (panel 10).  What FAG fails to make clear is whether these 12 people mentioned are actually listed on the memorial or have been added to the website just to give some sort of completeness.

Hi Jim. I'm in Cheltenham now. Don't know if you remember Gladys Giller somebody photographed her grave but it was face down. Turned it over but sshe's not mentioned on the stone. Not sure if it's the right grave.

Hello Wayne, That closes one box and opens another. I had been provided with a grave photograph which was said to be that for Gladys Mary Giller. However the broken headstone was lying face down on the grave. For me that was the end of the matter. This is the same grave that you have found and very kindly lifted the headstone so that it could be read.  A Hurculean effort for I know how heavy these are. The naming is that of Thomas Giller, wife and daughter. A bit of tracking down finds Thomas to be Gladys' great-grandfather. I also managed to find that he was buried in plot Q.10401 whereas Gladys is in grave Q.10330.  When I am looking for a grave and cannot find a plot layout I use CWGC graves on a trigonometry basis. I note that Percival St. Clair Hawkins is in grave Q.10318 (buried with father, private headstone). This is only 12 plots away from that of Gladys and this might help find hers, particularly if unmarked (hope not, as she was from a well-off family). Or, alternativly, I expect that Cheltenham Borough Council, who manage the cemetery (I think), can provide a map. But as I know that you are not local then perhaps this is for someone else to do. I am most grateful for you and your team for furthering this puzzle.
