“In wartime truth is so precious that she should be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” And of cover-ups and whitewashes. So who might this be ? ? ?

Lord Mersey? He oversaw the inquiries into the sinkings of the Titanic and the Lusitania.

(I thought at first that it was the Earl of Birkenhead, ne F E Smith, but it isn't.)

Yes that’s him: John Bingham, Lord Mersey. A number of conspiracy theories and accusations have swirled around the sinking of the Lusitania and around Lord Mersey; which are available online for those with a taste for that sort of thing.

Apology accepted.

But it's true that, take off their caps, and they really look alike, from the corners of the eyes right down to the stache !! creepy...

tja... MY stuff around the house is all arranged and put in order...

Boyfriend is still busy with his office... I've refrained from entering the room, I just poke my head in the door if I need something, for fear of stepping on something "important"...

This man served in the RFA. To my generation probably better known for his voice than his appearance.

An excellent idea; but no. In at least two ways in the right direction, though.

Well done, Ron.

The picture is part of a still from The Unpleasantness at The Bellona Club (early 1970s) in which he had a small part. I can remember recognising the voice (but not the face) instantly at the time.

Incidentally both his father and his sister served in France in WW1.

Marilyne,

An actor with a very distinctive voice, who I remember for a very creepy radio series 'Appointment with Fear'.  This back in the 1950's, long before your time...

More usually as "The Man in Black", I think. The Grey reference was to an episode of The Goon Show in which he made a guest appearance, playing a pastiche of his normal role.

err, that's exactly why I posted it!

Play the clip from 1:01

Secombe: "To commence this night of debauchery, we present the world's Mixed Bathing Champion of 1931, 'The Man in Black' - Mr Valentine Dyall"

[Gong]

Dyall:        "Allow me to correct you, little pygmy man.  I am no longer 'The Man in Black'.  I am now 'The Man in Grey'."

Secombe: "What brought about this change?"

Dyall:        "A very cheap dry-cleaner."

[Laughter]

Secombe: "Very well.  Mr Dyall, the floor is yours, but, remember - the roof is ours!"

:D

Well done. The picture (from the BBC) has been cropped to exclude the microphone on his left and the most of the piece of paper from which he is reading. I'm fairly sure he's wearing a Dennison Smock.

It was the recording of his Arnhem reporting in the film They Were Not Divided (on TV yesterday) which reminded me.

He served in the Canadian army in WW1. Wounded and gassed, I believe.

I think that it is Stanley Maxted. I have a copy of one of his Arnhem reports on a collection of WW2-related material.

That's him. I had not realised that he appeared in films.
