Pte W Burdon MGC

Back of the card states Stockton on Tees but unable to find any info

Unknown soldiers DLI & MGC although could this possibly be Pte Burdon fron the previous image?

I would say 100% yes - even apart from looking the same, note the creases in his trench cap and the rifle pads of his SD jacket in the first picture, and then look at the second. Identical in both cases, must have been taken at about the same time  .

Seconded! Especially as my eBay win of an album containing 96 WW1 postcards popped through the letterbox this morning. Mixed bunch - some of the "patriotic" nature and some have "£1" written on the back so reasonably recent additions: but some gems. I'm looking forward to finding out what I can.

First up: "3 of the Bhoys - Bert Morris, London. Dennis Webster, Leeds. Worsit, Bradford. PS Look out for these names in the next VC list (I don't think). [E]W"

Any thoughts on regiment? [EDIT - just taken a loupe to the shoulder of the chap on the left and am going with ASC]

George Thorington of 24 Harpour Road, [bust?]. I thought he'd be easy to find but there's a George William in the ASC who's in his 40s in 1918 and an Alfred G who's served just about everywhere (Dorsetshire Regiment, Devonshire Regiment, Labour Corps, Kings Own Scottish borderers, Labour Corps, Army Ordnance Corps). Unfortunately too out of focus for me to make much of his cap badge.

Close up for the experts...

Thanks - my machine's running slowly and I've just closed down PS so I'll put the back of the card up tomorrow for inspection. It is such a shame when they're so blurred. If I can't find an MIC, I guess it's home service.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the reply, I thought it was the same soldier and your observations confirm it.

The same young lad as in post 2280. Clearly he couldn't find anywhere to plug his iron in.

The same cap badge but a different lad I think. His facial features are very different. I imagine he has been sleeping in that uniform or using the jacket as a pillow!

Actually, pretty sure it is the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. Unless it is one of the London

Territorial Bns that wore the Paschal Lamb.

Yes, I agree. Even in its blurred shape it is very reminiscent of the Queen's.

Great pic - and a testament to the quality of the old lenses (at least, when the subject wasn't breathing!).

Charles Spalding (of whom there are far too many), in a uniform that looks somehow too large for him... Am not quite sure he's WW1 but I can replace him with one that is, if necessary.

Unknown. A very faint sepia original, so I've darkened it and leached the colour. Further to Frogsmile's post 2292 above, I'm wondering if he's another Queen's (Royal West Surrey) man.

Edit - better scan of the cap added.

Louise,

He's an actor - the caption says 'Charles Spalding in Called Back' (presumably the name of the play he was in). cool.gif

Looks like he's supposed to be a Naval officer.

Looks like a Queen's cap badge to me.

Good job someone can read! I thought it said "aka [something]". Oh well, he'll have to stay now or your comments will be sitting in thin air. whistle.png

Thanks, Mark. I'm gradually getting there when it comes to cap badges...

Guards Machine Gun Regiment

P.B.

I think he is Guards Machine Gun Battalion, was not the Guards Machine Gun Regiment formed by merging the GMGB with 1st and 2nd Life Guards and adopting the enclosed badge? A lovely picture though PB.

Yes, a Queen's man and presumably from the Transport Section.

I'd like to know the badge on his shoulder straps!

and he has a fairly early cocked peak, too.

Exellent photo PB, here is part of another MGG photo which I put on earlier in the thread also showing a shoulder title.

Would the MGG kept their previous Regiments buttons or GMGR ? JG
