Hi Dick,

Further information has come to light that James A Martin was the son of the groundsman at Eton and was allowed in to school, due to his intelligence and language ability. It was he, not Randle who joined the French Foreign Legion after being in the Army.

So still trying to find this Randle and his family.

Regards,

aweckert

Hi Dick,

I am trying to help a relative find her birth father's father. He was at Eton, surname Randle, around the same time as one James Arthur Martin, possibly late 1890's. Family story says Randle was in the French Foreign Legion. Randle went to India (date unknown) possibly married there, Doris Ann Gascoyne who had gone over as a nurse. They had a son Robert John born c1915. Randle died or was killed. Have searched GRO indexes for marriage and birth of son in England with no success.

Doris then married James Arthur Martin in 1919 Thame, Oxfordshire and he adopted the boy.

Any details would be gratefully received, thanks

aweckert

Dear Dick

Can you 'do' Dover College ?

If you can, is there anything on Thomas Dobson Bell (born 1870) ?

If there is a war record for University College, London, he should appear there, too.

Many thanks

William

P.s. please see my other

Dick,

Many thanks as always, a great great resource you have in your library.

He was mentioned in despatches posthumously in the Supplement to the London Gazette on 15th June 1916, page 5951.

The Marlborough College Register seems to have a small mistake though, he was killed in action on the 14/2/16.

Great information about him playing in the XV and Captain of the Rifle Club, all helps to picture the man.

Much appreciated.

Andy

Mike: The Bromsgrove School Register contains no more information than what you received from the CWGC website.

"The Artists' Rifles Regimental Roll of Honor and War Record" indicates the following:

Enlisted in the Artists' Rifles in August 1914 (Regimental Number 1566)

Commissioned as a 2nd Lieut, 2nd Bn, Devon Regiment, on 29 Aug 15

Wounded in Feb 1916

KIA on 3 Oct 1916 near Salonika.

Dick

Many thanks for the lookup, and for taking the time to check other sources.

Does the Artist Rifles roll of honour really say "KIA Salonika"?

The 2nd Devons were in France in October 1916 (unless I've made a mistake) and he's listed as buried in Mazingarbe.

kind regards

Mike

That may have been a mistake of interpretation on my part. The man directly above him was listed as KIA Salonika and I assumed since his space was blank that it applied to him also but I would now say that it probably meant that the place of death was not known. Dick Flory

I have over 400 British school, college and university registers and rolls of honor and will be happy to do lookups as long as you can give me the school your man attended - I do not have the time nor inclination to accept requests to look for a particular name when the school is not known unless they are Great War Royal Artillery officers (I have a database indexing all of those officers who are listed in the school registers). Please give me the man's name, school attended and general time frame when making your request and indicate what type of information you are looking for.

Regards. Dick Flory

Dick, Could you please 'look-up' your Eton School list 1893-99 for the surname PALLANT, specifically Arthur Cecil PALLANT and Herbert Arnold PALLANT who I believe was attending Eton during those years.

Thank you, Shannon Pallant Mark

Thanks Dick for replying ans so quickly. As these two Pallant boys had gone to a 'priviledged public grammar school' near Maidenhead I thought it may be Eton. At least I can elliminate that. Shannon
