whatisart Posted 21 January , 2007 Share Posted 21 January , 2007 Hi Duncan I'm thoroughly impressed by your knowledge – no doubt the result of a lot of research. Well, hope you can help... I'm looking for any information on the crew of the airship NS11 which was lost at sea 15 July 1919. I'm particularly after information on CH Lewry of the RNAS (J5174) who transferred to the RAF (313806) and was awarded the AFM before his death. I have his Navy records but can find nothing of his RAF records at the PRO. I'd love to know why he was awarded the AFM and anything more on the rest of the crew – who were all lost, so I'd guess there really isn't much in the way of surviving relatives. I'm putting together a site at http://web.mac.com/whatisart/iWeb/NS11/NS11.html Really hope you can help me put some meat on the bones of this fascinating story. Many thanks in anticipation. Peter Lewry Hi Peter, I have very little on Lewry except that he was stationed at Longside between at least October 1917 and August 1918. He flew in airships with R.E.V.Jelliffe between the above dates (Mentioned in Jelliffe's Log Book) He is also given fleeting mentions in the Longside Station Magazine, the "Battle Bag" in the issues of May 1918 (pages 39,41) and August 1918 (page 35) The casulties I am aware of are listed below, but be aware that they would only be ex RNAS men Warneford,Walter Kemeys Francis Goodall, FCdr Cameron,Frederick J37870 Connelly,Thomas F20367 Jacques,Alkfred Thomas F40902 Jarrett,Thomas George F20797 O'Connor,Charles F2460 Waghorn,Percy James F2161 That's all I've got for you I'm afraid. If you can add anything to these bare facts I would be interested in hearing, so that I can add it to my data base. The best of luck in your endevours Regards Duncan
whatisart Posted 23 January , 2007 Share Posted 23 January , 2007 Duncan That's fantastic – and thanks for getting back to me so fast. The service numbers will really help me find out more about each of the crew. However, I also have Captain Arthur Stanley Elliott DSC as one of the casualties – he seemed to be along for the ride. He is reported lost in The Times of 17 July 1919 and various articles since but is missing from some of the casualty lists for NS11. I must also revisit Battlebag – I missed Lewry when I went through them at Hendon. By the way, is Jelliffe's log at the PRO? Thanks again for your help – you have given me the impetus to move on again and find out more. Anything I do find I'll add to the website. By all means have a look through it and let me know if I've made any glaring mistakes (I'm new to all this!). Best wishes Peter

I once heard about a book about Stratford but have never seen it. Many thanks, Dom Hi Dom, I have a limited amount of info on Stratford. The majority of men who served there were specially recruited for work on a chemical process and their enlistment papers were so endorsed. These papers are normally signed by F.A.Brock. I have a list of 145 men known to have served there, of whom 44 served at Zeebrugge or Ostende, but it would be better if you PM'd me as I can then send you this list in Excel. Guest Posted 2 February , 2007 Share Posted 2 February , 2007 Hi Duncan my great uncle was in the RNAS William John Murch he was a wireless operator Later to the RAF Served in italy I think Thanks in Advance Mark Franke USA Hi Mark, I have very little on your great uncle, but here goes William John Murch, born St Pancras, London 12th January 1899 Enlisted in May1916 as an Air Mechanic 1st Class as a wireless operator Official Number F14599 Promoted Leading Mechanic 1st January 1918 Became Corporal 1st April 1918 on formation of RAF with official number 214599. I have nothing further. I hope this helps. You can get his RNAS service record from the National Archives at Kew under ADM188, but it will probably be very sparse. His RAF service record is not online, but would probably be equally sparse. If you can add anything you discover in your research I would appreciate it so that I can add it to my database. mark franke Posted 3 February , 2007 Share Posted 3 February , 2007 Duncan Thanks so much. Actually he joined the 12th London at age 16, Sept 1914. He was wounded at 2nd Ypres. After that, my grandfather ,who was in the Grenadiers found him and got him bounced out of the army for lying about his age. He then joined the RNAS and was eventualy in Italy befor the end of the war. Thanks for your info. I did not know he was promoted to corporal.
