Can you help with two Sheffield men I have an interest in?

They were both in the Anti-Aircraft Corp:

AA/1888 AB George Green

AA/1947 AB Raymond Hibberson

I understand Hibberson enlisted at Sheffield on 24 May 1915. From his service number, I suspect Green enlisted on the same date or shortly before.

Green and Hibberson died in separate Sheffield hospitals from malarial fever on 20 and 21 October 1917 respectively. They probably contracted the disease whilst serving on the Thames Defences - I shall be raising a glass in their memory over the weekend.

If you can fill any gaps on their service I would be most grateful. In particular any information on exactly where they might have been serving before their deaths would be very useful.

Also, the names of any other Sheffield men who joined Anti-Aircraft Corp around the same time would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Mark

Hi Mark,

Green,George, AB [RNVR] AA1888

Born 16th February 1886

Enlisted 9th July 1915

A native of London

Member of RNVR AA Corps, London Division

Enlistment papers marked "Available for foreign service"

Hibberson,Raymond, AB [RNVR] AA1947

Born 23Oct1882

Enlisted 24th May 1915 (according to enlistment papers)

Enlistment papers marked "Available for foreign service"

NB The official numbers in the AA Corps were not issued at the time of enlistment, but were issued later in batches, each of which were in alphabetic order. All their enlistment papers are held at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton, but little other info is held.

Hope this helps

Hi Cnock,

Williams,Cyril Basil Caudley,

Born 1st October 1892

Appointed Prob Flight Sub Lieut on 2nd May 1915

In HMS Fisgard 2nd May 1915 to 28th May 1915

At Eastchurc 29th May 1915 to ?

At Cranwell ?

At Chingford 9th June 1917

Appointment terminated 16th February 1918

Sorry that's all I can turn up. The gap between 1915 to 1917 suggests illness or accidental injury followed by a further unsuccessful attempt to become a pilot, but that is only supposition.

Hope this little helps

Can you tell me anything about CPO Hill, RNAS, who was a member of 20 Squadron RNAS, the unit which provided personnel for the early RNAS `Landship' experiments and trials

I understand he was the first "service" tank driver

Hi Stephen,

I am unable to confirm any of this as I cannot positively identify this man. However I am aware of two Hills in armoured cars as follows.

William John F9910 born at Notting Hill, London

William Robert F3669 born at York

If you think either fits let me know however I have only a little on them

Hi Duncan

Do you have anything on Henry William BRIDGER, born 1886? I think he was a Petty Officer in the RNAS and he was a cabinet maker by trade.

Thanks

Bridger,Henry William, Off No F6701

Enlisted 21Jul1915

Born Liss, Petersfield, Hants 7th February 1886

His enlistment papers are at the Fleet Air Arm Museum which indicates that he was not transferred to the RAF

and it probably suggests that he had left the RNAS prior to 1st April 1918. The only info on his enlistment papers not stated above would be physical details. His records can be downloaded from ADM188 for naval service, although these are usually fairly sparse.

Sorry that's all I have. I would appreciate any info you find to add to my data base.
