I couldn´t find any german troops in that area during the war. (around Vranje, the next large city).

Probably the photo was taken by bulgarian units???

Here is a part of a map of the Serbia october 1915 - january 1916

by the way...

In the background of the cemetery we see another cross, named Richard Pohlmann Batterie 331.

Here he is:

http://des.genealogy.net/search/show/4048775

Fußartillerie-Batterie 331, Gefreiter Pohlmann. It´s interesting, that both men came from the north of Germany (IX.Army Corps).

The photo must have been taken at the western front near Verdun (5th army)

The Fußartillerie-Batterie 331 was engaged:

20.3.-7.4.1916 Avocourt, Malancourt, Haucourt

9.4.-29.5.1916: Hill 304

I can see what you mean, and I did wonder about the eagle, but German uniforms and weaponry, and so a German unit.

Julian

PS: Posted on this thread as this is where the photograph is!

The photographs (no. 606) were posted too close together w/o a space, and so I could not edit this 'quote' just to show the top one.

But, I think the pickelhaube guys are Saxons, as shown by the cuff, and also the wappen, which in Saxony have a nickel centre to a tombak star. They are almost all NCO's, but the mix of uniforms and ages, and of medals, suggests to me reserves/depot?

What is the number though?

Hello!

I agree. Saxons. because of the ages of the guys I assume Landwehr too

607 is 3rd "Korporalschaft" (section? = a quarter of a platoon) of  5th company Landwehr-Regiment 60 from Weißenburg (Lorraine)

Andi, what do you think of the medal ribbons worn by the senior chap in 606? I though Franco-Prussian on the left, but the other is not the centennial medal, which would be usual with a Franco-Prussian medal - I think!

What a mixture there? Saxon cuffs on the chap sitting down and man with crossed arms to the right, and so I assume Saxon (Leib) Grenadier 100 or 101 on two standing... Hmm... got to go will come back later...

Hello Julian!

I´m not a specialist in medals and ribbons... What do you mean with "franco-prussian" medal?

The sign says "Erinnerung an Commando Königsbrück", which is in saxony.

I'm bad on medals, also, but the ribbon stripes reminded me of the Kriegsdenkmünze für die Feldzüge 1870–71

Some have the Mützenverdeckbänd over their State cockades, which I think was introduced in 1916?

The Mützenverdeckband was introduced for infantry, MG-troops, engeneers and cavalry march, 29, 1915. Bavaria April 30, 1915, Saxony April 22, 1915 and Wurttenberg April 13. 1915

I'm thinking Bavarian (cockades) and II Armee Korps (no piping in the cuffs). And S.98's and so pre-1915.

(Break for a "Prussian" input)

Many thanks Andi! I had always thought 1916 for some reason... Typically Bavarian, though, to leave it to the end to adopt the thing.

Do you have the DVE or whatever numbers for these introductions or a source I can quote in future? I am always astounded at how little seems to be known anywhere about the Mützenverdeckbander, even though they (like the presence/absence of State Cockades) are so useful for dating purposes.

No, i don´t have a DVE about that. I´ve got those infos from the brilliant books of Mr. Kraus. Unfortunately only availabe in german language:
