The Prussian Posted 2 March , 2017 Share Posted 2 March , 2017 Hello! #671/672: civilian railroaders. (officials) Probably the soldiers in #672 are railroad units. They might have an "E" upon the shoulder straps #673: Germersheim (Bavaria). Bright cap bands, maybe blue? Probably 2.Train-Btl.Nr.3 #674: Adress: Reserve-Infanterie-Regiment 101 ; 7th company ; 23. Reservedivision ; 12. Reservekorps (Saxon unit) Sender: Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment 80 (set-up in Wiesbaden and Mainz (Hesse). I was looking at it as a crude pick too, but after another look I think Frogsmile is right with a coppice cut staff.
The Prussian Posted 2 March , 2017 Share Posted 2 March , 2017 Yes, that´ s possible too. Landwehr men were older and maybe they needed a walking stick...

Such sticks/staffs were useful on long (especially) forced marches and I have occasionally seen them in other pictures of German troops on the march. I have a sense of it from your transcription, but once past the "Happy New Year Dear Brother Martin, It's been a long time without a message" opening there is no "life" left in my translation. 4thGordons Posted 6 June , 2017 Author Share Posted 6 June , 2017 So -- after a bit of a hiatus, I have just acquired another small trove of German photos, this time found in Canada but, as many have penciled prices in Euros on the back I assume they were brought in recently. As far as I can tell they are a random assortment and quite varied... about 25% have writing on. Some are "Carte de visite" style and probably predate the war, one or two others look to date from the 20s but most (perhaps 80) look to be WWI... so here goes. First off a large group - as you can see named in pencil (this is a about a 10x15cm) original on thin photo paper - back is blank.
4thGordons Posted 6 June , 2017 Author Share Posted 6 June , 2017 The only other larger print of a hospital group - slightly damaged and not particularly well focused either:

A general and his staff, including a pilot at right named Beckmann and a naval officer, and a KUK pelinipotentiary... And as Wikipedia is still blocked in Turkey I can go no further with any of the names...
