Großherzoglich-Hessisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.168, one chap has an '81' epaulette, another a [?]'L 21' or '221', and a third what might be a monogrammed one... GreyC Posted 11 July , 2017 Share Posted 11 July , 2017 Hi, the Bavarians sport a peacetime tunic and belong to the combined Bavarian airship-motorist battailon. The Kraftwagen Komp. was the 2nd Comp. of the battailon. Uniform details courtesy GreyC, formation details courtesy the Prussian. GreyC

I'll have a bash - nothing ventured, nothing gained, if only a correction from the Prussian or Grey C! Having problems with the place name - something 'Inn'?, but not one of the obvious places 'am Inn'... Posted from and addressed to the same place though? I think the message is something about the borders of Russia - at the end it seems to read 'grenzen Russland'? The right-hand message board indicates these are men from a Landsturm Infanterie unit, and seems to name their home-town, but I can't make it out... There was a Landwehr-Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 3 in East Prussia and any number of a 3.Landsturm-Infanterie-Bataillon for each Armee Korps... They are in 4 Kompagnie and 11th Korporalschaft? As for the men themselves, well, their officer has some kind of 'long service' medal, and they are armed with S.71 bayonets and have what I think are 1909 Patronentaschen. Three have marksman awards but the don't seem to have medallions and so these are probably 1st grade - at the bottom of 10 classes. So, not helping much - but probably enough to get our German buddies responding!

The Prussian Posted 30 July , 2017 Share Posted 30 July , 2017 Hello Julian! On the plate I read "3.Landsturm Inf.Btl. Bruchsal". That was the number XIV.26. The bataillon was formed in january 1915 and became mobile in february 1915. Later it came to Etappen-Inspektion 10. (10th army). I can´t read the place, but it seems to be the adress is not the adress, but the senders adress The first part of the text is difficulty, the second part probably is: Wir liegen hier nicht weit vor den Grenzen Rußland (we lay not far away from the russian border)

The Prussian Posted 30 July , 2017 Share Posted 30 July , 2017 I assumed, the K could be a R, but am not sure. I couldn´t recognize a fitting place with T. Unfortunately I only have the history of Res.Jg.7, but a friend of mine has the one from the active bataillon. A date could be helpful. Right now, I´ll take a break for a few hours. I will visit my local lake and the barkeeper...
