If I may say, a little too much detail there made it too easy Mr. Scorer.

I agree... this was too easy... google VC won in Villers-Outréaux and you get an immediate answer...

Mr.S is clearly a most generous person. Perhaps he should develop a bit more of a mean streak and make us suffer a bit. 😊

Sado-Masochistic Great War Forum.  Madam Whiplash has applied to be a Mod.

Let's try a WIT this at a bit of a tangent:

What proved to be good luck with Will Baker's Victoria Cross?

The pedant would say that that’s not an acronym. Luckily, I am not pedantic. Just petty.

You are, of course, all totally correct.

In my defence, it was the shock of getting one right and assuming that it was my turn next that made me offer it!

taking up my copy of Max Arthur's "symbol of courage", the only BAKER with a VC I find is Charles Georges (1830-1906) , a lieutenant of the Bengal Police Bn and later commander of the Egyptian police... surely we're not talking about the same man??

Of course not.   Our man's family had to use metallurgists- Its not a Great War subject, more a "pub quiz" question about the Victoria Cross

The only Baker V.C. that I can find is the same one that Marilyne mentioned; i.e. Charles George Baker.

Is this to do with Stanley Baker’s ownership of what he thought was a copy of Chard’s VC but which turned out not to be a copy?Or something.

Well done UG-   The story of what was thought to be a copy and was the real thing.  The tease is that VC was that of William Baker-  Stanley Baker's full name was William Stanley Baker:wub:

As punishment you now have to listen all day to Sabaton's "Rorke's Drift" !!!
