Ok, connections:

Royal Fusiliers.

"Glory" days were extensively and almost exclusively in Belgium.

Madelon "Glory* Hancock

Indeed so; the most highly decorated allied nurse of WW1, as well as the most decorated woman in history at the time. Well done.

Ok, another

Without the last e, he tried for a peace settlement but didn’t hang around.

Probably a silly question but is he German or is that iron cross a bit of a red herring?

The collar patches are distinctive to German general officers.

Thanks Ron; as is clearly apparent I am hopeless at uniform stuff.

Definitely a general officer and stationed at the top table during the war.

His family was dogged by bad luck.

I've been barking up a couple of trees with this. Please put me out of my misery where I am mistaken.

Unable to find any German woman of note to fit the bill I have been drawn to the descendants of Victoria.

Tree number 2 would be the Glucksburgs, and number three a certain patron of carriage driving.

You will no doubt be impressed by just how wide of the mark I can be once I get going. 😁

Steve

You are so close with the Victoria connection, yes there is a big one, and an HM QE 2 connection.

Blimey two out of three then. Pretty good going for me. I'll press on but ditch the Glucks👍

I’m going to have a punt at - Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse.  Son of Queen Victoria’s  second daughter, Princess Alice and Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine.
 He  Married twice,
1/ Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (m. 1894; div. 1901)
2/ Princess Eleonore of Solms-Hohensolms-Lich. (m. 1905)
He seems to have spent the war at the Kaisers HQ.

That’s the fellow Gunner H

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Louis,_Grand_Duke_of_Hesse

A family that was struck by all manner of tragic events, assassinations, plane crash victims and unfortunate medical conditions (dare I suggest to close to relative marriages)

The clues were based on one of his younger sisters, Alexandra, who married Tsar Nicholas II, the last Emperor of Russia, and we know the fate of the Romanov’s, while another sister, Victoria Mountbatten, would be the mother of Queen Louise of Sweden and of Princess Alice of Battenberg, who was the mother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, 99 not out.

At least  you saved me from going down the “nice piece of Battenberg” route.

Sorry, neverforget,   I hate to see a fellow suffering.  First wife left the roost after finding him in bed with a stable hand.

Apparently he was very close to an inventor and manufacturer of a mouthwash.  who, either by coincidence or not, died of mouth cancer.  Puts a chap right  off listerine.

Quite a few of my worryingly sparse brain cells have been extinguished on this one. Nice one Knotty and well played Gunner. I was almost there or thereabouts but couldn't quite get the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle to fit. I might prescribe myself an extra dose of morphine to try to help me forget..😊
