OK... but this was not WWI...

As punishment you now have to listen all day to Sabaton's "Rorke's Drift" !!!

M.

I do that anyway.    My normal day is full of challenges- grunge, hip-hop, garage, heavy metal........ or Emmerdale. Tough life.

Yes, not GWF- I did say it was a little at a tangent but it's a nice story that is different to the relentless Dix,Noonan,Webb- Aschcroft line of mega-bundles of spondoolas.

You could also put it on the music thread, most who visit here can also be found there as well😁

I believe I've already mentioned their 14-18 album on there.

I notice that great minds think alike!!! Except for the hip-hop part.

now if you're all nice I'll share my take on Brothers in Arms with you one of these days.

Meanwhile... WHO of our GW gentlemen shares my idea on West-Flemish on being a horrible mixture of bad Dutch and worse German ???

Has your gentlemen appeared here as a photo or is he too famous and recognisable? My first guesses would be Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria, being in the vicinity

Despite vaguely  recognising the quote, and associating it with a Gunner,    I though you were expressing a person opinion!

Update:  I have a copy of" the War Diary of the Master of Belhaven 1914 -1918"   by the  Hon Ralph G. A. Hamilton.   (O/C “C” Bty., 108 Bde. Royal Field Artillery, 24th Div.

Ironic, since apparently,  West Flemish is the nearest you will get to Old English.  Gōdne ǣfen, Marilyne!

Excellent shooting Gunner; I am interested in the linguistic aspect, can you point me to any sources? No problem if not.

Certainly Pete,   there is a good online translator at

https://www.oldenglishtranslator.co.uk

There's a lot of stuff on youtube.  Most is unintelligible to the modern ear.

Most of the surviving texts are poe.s and sagas. The Wanderer is my favourite, and I'm not been from Wolverhampton. “Wyrd bið ful aræd!”

I've been looking at American participants in the Paris peace conference, but I wouldn't let that lead you astray. Most of my hunches are way off.

Quite pleased with this piece of detective work;

Yes indeed - the legendary Mayor of New York City. He was a great man in his way, though a Republican a supporter of FDR’s New Deal. The airport in NYC is named after him.

Nope, though poetical is right! Nearer home, though.

Not a career soldier; served with the RAMC.

Expelled from the Scottish National Party for being a communist, and from the Communist Party for being a Nat. Flirted with Fascism. Listed Anglophobia as his main  interest in Who's Who.
