No offence meant to any collar pins, or those who may have worn them.

Regarding my latest acrobatic gentleman; he was decorated with the same medal in both wars.

NOT american you say, so not Steve Savage I gather...

Isn't Charley, of "Charley's War" taking to the air in one episode???

Definitely not American. 100% non fictitious episode too, so not Charley.

You may have noticed that the aeroplane is upside down. Taking into account my other clue that he was decorated in both wars, it is safe to assume that he survived his unintended bit of stunt flying.

Decorated with the same medal in both wars is quite a distinction in his case.

It is a bit odd that no-one on this illustrious forum knows who the dangling pilot is. I knew when I was ten by reading the LION comic.

Hi Stripeyman

I Think you’ll find not only do I know who it is, I can tell you the plane he flew, where he lived, before and after the war, his career between the war and why he got a bar to his medal also, where his grave is and the names of the gentlemen who rediscovered it, and my family’s direct association with him, I think the expression is top trump😁

Just noticed your previous post, where I left some cryptic clues which you acknowledged 👍

I'm surprised he wasn't bagged in an instant too, I must say.

Perhaps this picture of his medals will help to identify him.

You (and I) need to get out more. When safe to do so of course.

Pete, I think this virus was created to keep the likes of you and I safely indoors. Just a theory of course.

You've been reading those conspiracy theories. I was self isolating and socially distancing for ages before Covid-19; I'm just anti-social. Just as an aside are we any closer to identifying Knotty's upside down relative? Asking for a friend

I don't think so. If you know who he is, please put me out of my misery.

He was the only person who was awarded a certain...award in both wars, but then, I'm sure you know that.

For gawd's sake, managed to somehow wrestle himself back into the cockpit from the illustrated upside down position, and save himself and his 'plane. Dashed good fellow or what?

Time to put everyone out of their misery, at the time of this incident he was Lt Louis Arbon Strange, later Wing Commander.

Thanks, John. An extraordinary fellow.

The only airman to be awarded the D.F.C. in both world wars.

Harking back to my post 13239 on 12th June, I was dismayed that I could not find the photo to attach.

I will now attempt to do so.

  • 2 months later...

We haven't had a who is this for awhile.

I have to confess that I had never heard of this man until I came across him looking for something else:

His brother is certainly better known.

Edited to insert a better cropped picture.

No. Wrong side. I will post a slightly different crop of the picture which shows the collar of his uniform.

His elder brother was very famous but not for anything military. (The brother had strange connection to someone we had in WIT quite while ago.)

Nice to see this thread back.

From his uniform I would say Austro-Hungarian rather than Bulgarian, so would he be Austrian or Hungarian?

A-H general with a 'tache?  Doesn't narrow it down much.

He had something common with Sir Arthur Sullivan.
