I think so too. Good post, good clues, good spot.

Well I'm not counting my chickens just yet, but I think we had deduced that he is naval, and I know that Anthony Eden's younger brother was killed at Jutland. The date in the last clue seemed to tie it all together.

Is it (William) Nicholas Eden? Younger brother of Anthony.

Nicholas was killed in the battle of Jutland.

Correct. Well done.

Midshipman William Nicholas Eden, aged sixteen; lost with HMS Indefatigable, 104 years ago today.

I am currently reading 'Amateur Gunners', by Alexander Douglas Thorburn.

In a letter to his sister dated 30th September 1916, he mentions a visit to his

battery by a Major General, 'I can't tell you his name.  Without one of him a belt

wouldn't be any use at all'.  Any ideas who he might be alluding to?

I'll try the obvious: Isoroku Yamamoto.

Sorry RM, he is not the obvious, a little bit more obscure.

My first impression was not chinese, but Japanese… now you tell us Russian… considering the asian features, I'm guessing Manchuria … Zhang Zualin?? Machurian leader during WWI and killed by the Japs in 1928??

Hi Marilyne

Did you not open the link that Steve sent with his post#13180?   You’re first impression was definitely on the right track with Japanese, I’m afraid you have gone off on a bit of a wild goose chase.

Steve at first thought he was Russian, but then linked to the YouTube video clip of The Vapours singing “”Turning Japanese”.

Extra clue... he was a rare statistic in the war.

I'll have a crack - the CWGC lists only 1 WW1 fatal casualty who is identified as Japanese.

ASADA, NOBORU

Service Number 228346

Died 02/07/1917

Aged 23

52nd Bn.
Canadian Infantry

Son of Mrs. Kaori Asada, of Canadian Japanese Association, Vancouver.

G’day WSL

No it is not him either, but thanks for the info about him being the only CWGC WW1 fatality. But you are correct as identifying him as a casualty.

M

You youngsters must check out the “old rockers” thread, quite illuminating😁😁

Wild guess.

Would he have something to do with a certain siege of a German port?

I really think so 😊 Sorry about that Pete. Apologies might be in order for our Belgian soldier friend too.

Sorry for leading you astray, Marilyne. If it's any consolation though, I have wreaked much more suffering upon Mr. Owls.🙉
