is a certain mr xxx yyy "CMG" Am I mistaken in thinking that stands for Companion (of the Order Of) St Michael and St George ??

Yes, that's right. It was, and is, usually awarded to people in the diplomatic service. Commonly referred to as "Call me God."

There are three ranks of the Order of St Michael and St George:

Commander (CMG) - known as "Call Me God"

Knight Commander (KCMG) - known as "Kindly Call Me God"

Grand Cross (GCMG) - known as "God Calls Me God"

CMG is Companion. CBE is Commander.

Believe or not John, I thought I typed Gibson. Whether or not it was my predictive text gone crazy I don't know, but Gibson was the lady I had in mind

ah quand même… as we would say!!

Spot on, Margaret Gibson, first WAAC to be awarded the MM it is.

She was awarded the medal for her actions in Abbeville, during the bombing raids of May 1918. She died less than two months later from dysentery and is buried in Mont Huon Cemetery, Le Tréport

Her father was a diplomat and she was born in Mauritius.

Big let down.  I had hoped to post my first WIT photo, showing a Black Watch subaltern in full dress, and it had to be done today.

Can't find the photo, but that date was the only clue.

We've all done it matey; you type out the fiendishly obscure hints and then the photo is nowhere to be found. I wonder if we can do it without the photo if you do a few clues?

A young regular subaltern in the photo, busy in WW1, F&F.  Today’s date very significant.

Unless it's the Black Watch of Canada the mystery subaltern didn't die on 12th June 1915, 16, 17 or 18, would that be correct? If so are we talking an event which resulted in a medal?

This man won the VC 105 years ago today, but he wasn't Black Watch and he wasn't a subaltern. So it's pretty pointless me posting him but his story is remarkable.

There were two VC’s at Givenchy on that date, a Canadian and a Scot, I’m sure the Canadian died, so I will go for the Scot. Problem is that I haven’t a clue of their names without looking on the electric encyclopaedia.

The great Willie Angus it is. Wounded 40 times rescuing an officer from his home town of Carluke; when the King mentioned the number of wounds during the presentation of the VC he said, "Aye, but only 13 were serious". A man hewn not born.

We could have a whole raft of WiT?s by posting photos of people who aren't Dags' Black Watch subaltern, but who appear in the identity parade. I have seen the future and it works.....

As the key date to my BW Officer has now passed, shall I reveal his name?
