This man was discharged on 5 Dec 1917, but only aged 26 (Ancestry). Your man may have been a pre war discharged soldier?

e.g. 5659 of 2nd RMF served in SA and was wounded in 1902 (enlisted 1897) Short service papers on Ancestry. He was from Limerick! https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1114&h=819337&tid=&pid=&queryId=b6c9e01994045cbedfe781a40fa2f849&usePUB=true&_phsrc=qzF96&_phstart=successSource

EDIT - just seen the above RIF death fit!

It certainly looks like him, and his DC says RMF too. Thank you kindly Ivor. I have sent him to Terry and await his decision.

776 Cleary declared his age at discharge as 35 - which may have been a false age, but something to consider.

We can rule out 4406 Cleary.

The overseas pension number is post 1919 (1936 according to his ledger).

Newspaper article.

Cut to Pieces.Ex-Soldier’s Sad End. Yesterday (Friday) morning some miles-men found the mangled remains of a man on the Galway line, near Monksland. After some time these were identified as a man named Clougher, aged about 35 years, an ex soldier, from Clonark district. How he came to be on the line so far remains a mystery, but it is thought he was run over by a goods train some time during the night. The Coroner (Mr Burke), Roscommon, has been communicated with and an inquest will be held.

Clonark is in  Cornafulla, County Roscommon, it seems there is another (the same one?) in Athlone, County Westmeath. May also be spelled Cloonark.

A very brief ancestry family tree has a James Clarke killed on 6/6/19 by train. This, without supporting docs, says he married Margaret Mary McDermott, at Riverstown, Sligo on 19/11/17. It indicates witnesses were Martin Clarke and Mary Kate Begley

That James was a policeman?? Would he have had/been an alias? Or recorded as an ex soldier at death?  (irishgenealogy.ie)

Thank you kindly Mark and Ivor. I am catching up with you now. Is Clarke or Clougher the alias?

I had a look for a DC for James Clarke, policeman between 1917 and 1919 without success.

Possibly.

Sergeant James Clarke 61721. Age 33. Died 8 Dec 1918.  Stationed Ballinameen, Roscommon. Married.

The problem with Ballaghaderreen is there are lots of ways to spell it and it is in three counties.
