Remembered Today:

Where am I?

While Pat is thinking, I shall cheekily slip one in.

I am standing at the side of a long, straight road, looking at a shrine. To my right, at approx 45° behind me, is a very large memorial. What is across the road, directly behind me? Extra points for identifying the shrine and the memorial.

I think I am wrong but have to take a stab at it. Are you standing on the road from Aveluy looking at crucifix corner where there is a crucifix? The memorial, being Thiepval? : (

Sorry, Connor, but I'm afraid you're right in thinking that you're wrong. :D

As a further clue, the memorial was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

Large memorials by Sir Herbert Baker:

  • Tyne Cott, Belgium
    • Long Straight Road: PassendaeleStraat?

    [*]Delville Wood (SA), France

    • Long Straight Road: Rue de Peronne
      • which could put Delville Wood CWGC Cemetery directly behind you if you are facing sort of South West
      • and The South African Memorial 45 degrees behind you on the right
      • Stuck on the shrine (and StreetView is not available for that road!)

Can you gives us a clue as to what direction you are facing?

David

The long straight road is in France, David, but isn't the Rue de Péronne.

It's difficult to give another major clue without immediately giving the game away. The memorial is round and includes sculptural stonework by Charles Wheeler. The shrine is a building rather than a monument or calvary. It was dedicated in 1975.

My guess is over but the memorial at least, I am guessing is Neuve-Chappelle memorial? no clue about a shrine or the road.

And the cigar goes to Tom (who should now let Pat put his question). Yes, Neuve Chapelle. The shrine is dedicated to our Lady of Fatima, directly behind me is the Portuguese cemetery, and at 45° behind me, to the left, is the Indian Memorial, beside the La Bombe/Port Arthur roundabout on the road to La Bassée.

I owe you an apology, David, because I've just realised that I said I was facing towards the shrine, with the large memorial at 45° behind me, 'to my right'. That should have been 'to my left'. Sorry.

Mick,

Thanks but I was still barking up the wrong memorial!

I think we might need a clue, Pat.

I, for one, have no idea where you live so a 'a boys day out' might take you anywhere.

And there are a lot of bridges, traffic and big stone crosses in the world.

Or am I missing a subtle clue somewhere in your initial post?

Paul
