Okay. Here goes with my first attempt:

1) the grave of a Lancastrian VC.

2) close by are family members with a confederate connection.

3) SH would look for a ghostly hound in vain here.

Where am I and who's the VC?

Oh hell. It took me longer to think up the clues than it took you to answer, Nigel! You could at least have made it look harder

Paul

Over to you.

As there are quite a few members participating in this thread, maybe we should work on the basis that if the person who answers the question doesn't then post a new one within, for example, 24 hours, the next turn reverts to the person who posted the question. They can then set another one.

It may well be that Nigel is away on other business and won't know he's won. Some members do have lives away from the GWF (I am told although I find this difficult to believe). I'm sure Nigel won't mind if he skips a go.

This would make it my 'turn' again but as I'm away myself until the weekend, would some kind soul like to offer kick this off again?

OK,

I am lying on my back on the ground with my feet facing almost due North

Above me against the sun, I see two large long and parallel near-rectangular silhouettes

The northern ends I can see beyond my feet

The southern ends are behind my head

Hi David,

Is it the silhouette of the memorial at Vimy Ridge ?

Hi David,

'Fraid not, the orientation is wrong! (Interestingly if you look on Google Maps - satellite view, it shows the memorial during its major refurbishment.)

Could you be lying on the ground and looking up between the barrels of the two 15-inch naval guns outside the Imperial War Musueum?

Here's my effort:

I'm somewhere in Belgium.

I'm hoping to find something but it could take some time as I don't know exactly where to look.

It's easier than I thought. A couple were already there looking at it.

Where am I and/or what am I looking for?

Are you looking for the grave of Peter Kollwitz at Vladslo German cemetery? And it is the stone sculptures of his parents that has helped you to find it?

Apologies for the delay. Here we go. Sorry but I can't hope to compete with David's cryptic excellence.

1) Immediately behind me, a memorial where height is relevant.

2) Looking ahead to the south west, I can see a distant cemetery with an empty grave.

3) France

Which memorial and why?

.

You wouldn't be anywhere near Villers-Bretonneux and the Australian National Memorial, would you Paul? Adelaide Cemetery perhaps off in the distance.
