at a guess it is the top of his very long trousers,

Similar bulge on extreme right man.

I was thinking the same thing, old friend.  The bulge is I think his shirt billowing over the high waist. Common then, but not always understood now.

Superb picture Toby.  It reminds us that there was no strict clenching of fingers, and thumb aligned along seams with the off hand at that time.

Royal Marine Light Infantry (RMLI) Maxim Detachment. Fantastic, unsent Postcard with great details of the Naval Maxims and Mounts. Note the variation in the, previously discussed,  single breasted RM Frock.

Superb photo Toby, I had not seen a frock without chest pocket flap before.  It’s interesting that the frock seems to have been one of the earliest OR upper garments on which collar badges were worn.

Makes sense. Now you thought of it. Cheers.

A clever and valiant attempt to get everyone in the shot.

Note Pte Halfcroucher grovelling about, front row near extreme right. Agonies of cramp? Wind?

Noted. Just to the right of Zaphod Beeblebrox!

Does he have wind or is he windy?

We are being spoilt today. Thats a Mk1 SMLE in use VERY VERY unusual indeed! Any idea on unit and date ? Thanks for sharing!   Early mid 1916 by the Equipment.

I'm guessing 1916 as well, there is a place name in there but I can't understand it, something like "we've not been in knickers many days"

Thank you. The lad top right has both band and bugler badge on his own LEFT arm ....... unusual [I say no more]

Top and bottom left  men I cannot identify their badges. There seems to be enough metal on their shoulders to be TF rather than regular army, and TF could be a law unto themselves until pulled up by the annual inspection.
