That was quick. Many thanks.

I'm confused. My Philip James Griffiths Pipon was born in Chester, Cheshire, in 1874 but was the son of a clergyman, James C C Pipon. The 1891 Census shows him at Charterhouse and in 1907 he married Harriet Nina Whately.

He had a long military career and served in WW1. His Medal Rolls Index Card shows that he was a Captain. Corps: Interpreter. Staff OFF 116 and Intell Cps OFF/255. According to Six: The Real James Bond 1909-1939, by Michael Smith, in 1916 "Captain Philip Griffiths Pipon of the Indian Army was appointed as military control officer in Marseilles, an important port for travel in the Mediterranean, and was replaced shortly before the end of the war"

Medals: The most distinguished order of St Michael and St George companions and the most eminent order of the India Empire companions, the Military Cross, Indian General Service with North West Frontier 1908 clasp, the Mons Star 1914 with clasp, the British War and Victory medals, Indian General Service medal with Afghanistan North West Frontier clasp 1919, Delhi Dubar Medal 1911.

Thank you so much for all this information. I was hoping for more detail about his military career and you've provided it. Great.

He was also a good tennis player and played at Wimbledon in 1906 and 1907.

Hello Dick - two more names from the Newbury war memorial:

Joseph Alfred Hopson - Taunton School

&

Lionel Arthur Harris - Bloxham School

If you have either of these school registers I'd be very grateful for their entries.

And if you happen to have Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour I'd love a better (than Ancestry) scan of Hopson's entry - notably the photograph.

In hope

Phil

Phil: Sorry, but I do not have a WWI register for either Taunton School or Bloxham School. PM me your email address and I can send you a high-resolution image of Hopson from De Ruvigny's RoH

Hi again Dick - moving on in my research the next target was Sidney Isaac Hughes, 14281, Coldstream Guards. After a couple of dozen names with no De Ruvingy entry I now get two in succession, and with photos!

If it is possible I'd love a decent scan of Hughes' photo - page 196.

Thanks again from all of us you are giving such great service to!

Phil

PS

Hopson is Vol 2 p 172

Hughes is Vol 1 p 196

Hello Dick

I wonder if you can help me with Lt Colonel Marcus Charles James Hartland – Mahon, Royal Horse and Field Artillery, who attended Glenalmond School in 1883.

Unfortunately, his service papers have not survived at the National Archives, so I only have a basic story gleaned from Army Lists.

I am aware that he was wounded at the Aisne on 14th September, 1914, possibly with the 31st Howitzer Battery, but I have not confirmed that. Also, I have been unable to discover which Royal Artillery Brigades/Batteries he later served in, specically as a Lt Colonel, when he received the DSO for service at Sherqat, Mesopotamia in October, 1918.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Hi Dick

I’m a Newbie to this forum trying to find out some details of our family WW1 heroes, and would appreciate some look-ups from school registers.

I’m looking for information on three brothers:

Stanley Gordon BROWN born November 1891 in Maryport, Cumberland.

Educated Nelson School, Wigton (??), Lime House School, Wetheral and Repton School, Derby. He entered Repton in 1905 and probably left in 1909 or 1910. After school he was a solicitor’s articled clerk in Carlisle. He enlisted in 1914 London Z/719 in RNVR Hawke Battalion, and was KIA at Gallipoli on 19 June 1915. He is remembered on Repton’s Roll of Honour.

Edward Broadley BROWN born September 1892 in Aspatria, Cumberland.

Educated at Nelson School, Wigton and at Cranleigh School, Surrey from 1906 (?) to 1910 (?). Left England in 1910 for New Zealand, and became solicitor’s clerk. Enlisted in 1914 with Auckland Regiment and saw service in Samoa and on Somme (where he was awarded military medal) before return to New Zealand and civilian life as a solicitor in Auckland.

Gilfrid Elliot BROWN born April 1894 in Aspatria, Cumberland.

Educated at Nelson School, Wigton and HMS Conway, Merseyside from Sept 1909 to May 1911. After school joined White Star Line as officer cadet (?). Enlisted in Border Regiment as private 19877 in February 1915 and was in 6th Battalion, wounded in Gallipoli. Was then commissioned and joined 11th Battalion, where he was KIA on the Somme on 18 November 1916.

Their mother and next-of-kin died in 1919, so few details about Stanley Gordon Brown and Gilfrid Elliot Brown appeared in books of remembrance etc. Any pictures would be particularly welcome.

Many thanks in advance

Hi Dick

Many thanks indeed for the info - adds a few more details although I'm pretty sure he died on 19 June 1915, rather than on 25 April - possibly Repton had him confused with another RN Division death.

A slight follow up on Lieut. Malcolm Gilbert Stewart Blane, the details on the Christ Church, Oxford web site give slightly different dates for Oxford University and slightly different spellings for the names of the Berkshire and Scottish homes.

Malcolm Gilbert Stewart was the fourth child and only son of Captain Gilbert Gordon Blane, a retired army officer who had inherited Foliejon Park, near Windsor, and Mabel Augusta Stewart, daughter of Admiral Hon Keith Stewart and a grand-daughter of the 8th Earl of Galloway.

The family also had a home at Altan Donn House, Nairn in Inverness-shire. Many holidays were spent looking over the Moray Firth and these visits were a strong influence on Malcolm. Between the ages of nine and twelve he wrote a diary which comprises seven volumes and is “written in his own handwriting with his own spelling, both of which improve over the years”. It is held by the Highland Council Archives in Inverness.

He was educated at Eton and was at Christ Church from 1911-14. While he was in Oxford he was an active member of the University Gaelic Society. He was also a member of the Manx Society and took the keenest interest in Celtic things After his death a member of the Society wrote, “the loss of this brilliant young life is a sad blow to the Celtic world, in which, as he had already shown, he would have been a great power”.

He belonged to the Oxford University Cavalry Corps for three years and was gazetted to the Cameron Highlanders in May, 1915. [Temporary Lieutenant in the 5th Cameron Higlanders LG 27 March 1915; Confirmed in rank of Second Lieutenant in the 3rd Bn, Cameron Highlanders LG 19 August 1915. Theatre of war first served in is France, date of entry therein is 10 May 1915].

He was killed on 25 September 1915 and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Panel 119 to 124 and, on the war memorial at Winkfield. Berkshire. [There is also a family memorial in St Mary's Church, Winkfield.]

His Estate amounted to £181 13s 4d. Administration granted to his mother and Edward St Aubyn.

Alison
