Emma HOWELL, QMAAC, died 30/10/18. Her name is on the Harrogate War Memorial. I need a photograph showing it.

Dorothy Mortimer WATSON, TFNS, died 13/3/17. Her name is on the Harrogate War Memorial. Photograph needed. Her name is also on the Roll of Honour in Harrogate Hospital and I need a photograph of that, too.

Katie CHAPMAN, munition worker, died 5/12/16, buried Woodhouse Cemetery (now known as St. George’s Fields); plot 5280 (edge plot abutting the wall next to Henry Price Student Flats).

The munition workers were generally young and from poor families so I will not be surprised if some of the above are without headstones and unmarked.

Peter, I have all of the graves of females in Le Havre as well as those off the Salta Memorial. I am needing to know if the Salta Memorial carries the phrase something like "an unknown nurse". A photograph of that is what is required. By a process of elimination I am certain that this was Jean Roberts, QAIMNS. I believe that the CWGC thinks so too and intend adding her name to the memorial when time, money and a man with a chisel coincide. So either note of the unknown nurse or the name of Jean Roberts is what I require from Le Havre.

In Estaires Communal Cemetery there are two graves of female foreign nationals cared for by the CWGC. These are Rosalie Detourlet (died 18/10/18) and Marie Sloran (died 20/10/18). These are the two that I am after from there.

However, you will see that the names are in Parish Order and, unfortunately for us nowadays, are Surnames and initials only.

Have had a look at CWGC and see that Hannah Owen and Louisa Parry were Holyhead girls on the Leinster. Forum member LST_164 has quite a knowledge of Anglesey casualties and it may be worth giving him a PM if you haven't already got background information.

Couldn't see Margaret Williams on CWGC and no N Wales link I could see for Jane Howdle.

Peter, When a previous photographer went to the Salta Memorial Jane Roberts was not on it. Recent events, with a little of my help I like to think, has established that Jane Roberts should go on it. I have been awaiting the addition. Is it one that you have in your archives as I would like to have a photograph of her name on it. Jim

Hywyn, Margaret Williams is not on the CWGC list as her death was caused by a non-war collision in the Irish Sea. She was from Caergeiliog, Bodedern, Anglesey but the good citizens of Holyhead placed her name on the war memorial there and on the Bangor Arch. Jane Howdle was from Liscard, Cheshire but was working at Benllech, Anglesey at the time of her death. Hence her inclusion on the local war memorial and the Bangor Arch. Thank you for pointing out the Bangor Society site. There will be copyright issues if I just pinch their photographs and that is why I am looking for someone to take them for me and give me permission to publish them in my Register. Jim

hywyn gave me a nudge to wake me up to the existence of the Anglesey casualties in this thread!

As to the Bangor Arch, I'd follow his advice to contact the Civic Society since the structure is I think still fenced off and getting into it might be difficult.

Anglesey suffered a few female casualties in the WW1 period:

Mrs. Jane Ellen Howdle of the Lusitania 1915 has her name on the parish war memorial at Llanfair-Mathafarn-Eithaf, aka Benllech, with the address Pantysaer (a local farm, which may be associated with her Hughes parents). A mistake was made by CWGC re. her burial, so initially her name was placed among the unrecovered/unknown MN casualties for that vessel on the Tower Hill Memorial. It is still there, and I can send you a picture of that panel if desired. However, her body was in fact recovered and identified, and is buried in the Lusitania plot at the Old Church Cemetery, Cobh, Ireland. The various identified casualties there, including other females, are commemorated by a special memorial. I have a copy picture of this, sent by forum member Isadore whom I advise you to contact. A photo of the Benllech Memorial is on the "Anglesey Info" site below, but I don't think it's clear enough for your purposes (her name is third from the bottom of the marble panel):

Her only memorials would therefore be at Holyhead War Memorial and the Bangor Arch. Despite her ?home/next of kin address she is not commemorated at Bodedern. If she is on any other local Holyhead memorial (eg, church/chapel) members Rogin and Carmania specialise in that town's casualties and might lend a hand with her or the others below.

Hannah Owen 2nd Stewardess on the RMS Leinster 1918 was recovered and is buried at Maeshyfryd Cemetery, Holyhead. I have an image of her gravestone which is a civil type, family stone in Welsh covering her, her infant sister d.1885, and both her parents (last one d. 1948). This I had from a non-Forum source, and if desired I can offer to ask the donor if he's willing to let me pass a copy to you. Named on Holyhead War Memorial and the Bangor Arch.

Louisa Parry 2nd Stewardess as above was never recovered, so the principal commemorations will be on Holyhead War Memorial, the Bangor Arch and Tower Hill. If I haven't already sent you a picture of her name from Tower Hill, I am happy to do so.

Annie Roberts, Member 2663 WRAF d. of pneumonia 12 Nov 1918 is also buried at Maeshyfryd Cemetery. Headstone CWGC type in dark slate. I can ask about a copy of this image from the same chap who took Hannah Owen's grave if you wish. She is named on the Holyhead War Memorial, Bangor Arch, and I understand also on Bootle, Lancs. War Memorial.

PS- in your list there is "Dyfed, Abergwili" - Dyfed ceased to exist in 1996 and became Carmarthenshire. Abergwili is on the edge of Carmarthen town, member SteveJ may be able to help perhaps?

I know this may sound daft but im an admin on a rabbit forum (i breed, show and judge rabbits lol) we have members dotted all over the country and i could put a post on our forum asking if anyone lives local to take a piccie for you, have u an updated list of what you need?

A quick update, Castleford I visited the new Cemetery yesterday and found What I think is Polly Booth's grave E.51, the section was well marked and there was a good few numbers on the stones, I took a photo, but need to check with Wakefield Dist Council first, Mary Gibson's I couldn't find even the section so once again to the council I go. The council is very good at marking the grave sites out with the numbers I wish they where all the same.

My manuscript is in Word and is searchable. We come out with the same listing of women and I am grateful for the details of other memorials containing their names. I have photographs of the Cobh wall and the memorial at Tower Hill for these women. As yet, I do not have a photograph of Hannah Owens' headstone and would welcome a copy. Please contact your source and ask whether I may use it ensuring that they are aware that it will be published in a book. They will be acknowledged as having provided it. The same with Annie Robert's. If not forthcoming it is not the end of the world as I will still be seeking out someone to help me get photograph of a name on the Holyhead War Memorial and the Bennlech War Memorial.
