Fattyowls Posted 12 November , 2020 Author Share Posted 12 November , 2020 Chilly looking magnificence John. Not sure about the first one but the chapel at Notre Dame de Lorette followed and the Arras Memorial at Faubourg d'Amiens are otherworldly. It's a good angle at Etaples with the sea in the background if I'm not mistaken. Is the misty cemetery Lijssenthoek? Not sure about the German cemeteries, is the first Fricourt and the one with the flat panel Langemark? I recognise Vladslo from the Käthe Kollwitz sculptures and is the last one the gates at Pozieres? Pete

Marilyne Posted 13 November , 2020 Share Posted 13 November , 2020 NICE !!!! The closest I ever got to having snow on the battlefields was december 2017, at a very impromptu visit - just heard I was getting deployed and had 2 days to get all my gear from the depot in Ypres - area was more frozen than snowed in. Marilyne Posted 13 November , 2020 Share Posted 13 November , 2020 I've been saying for a while now: next snow, I'll jump in the car and make sure I'm on the frontline before sunrise... but the snow never really came! m;

Fattyowls Posted 13 November , 2020 Author Share Posted 13 November , 2020 Good stuff gang. The snow and ice scenes are scenic, but I'm going to have to wear mittens if we get any more. There is one John took of High Wood in the snow with a low sun which is beautiful but can only be viewed while clutching a steaming mug of hot chocolate. Pete. P.S. I loved the black and white Guillemont Road one Tom @Tom Tulloch-Marshall . It's another one where I have an interest and that has a sharpness that you don't quite get in colour. Maybe I'm mellowing towards monochrome.

Sorry, just one more, taken from Italian front line positions at 10,000ft on the Adamello in early July. Five minutes later there was a complete white-out. horrocks Posted 14 November , 2020 Share Posted 14 November , 2020 I love the hoar frost and snow photos, magical and haunting. As several others have lamented, the lack of snow over the past few years has been very frustrating. I too have been poised on the wrong side of the Channel obsessively checking Meteo forecasts, or checking the Arras webcam, ready to jump into the car and hope that I haven't forgotten some vital piece of photographic tat. I now use a very ordinary £400 'ish Panasonic Lumix with a Leica lens. It has about 17,527 different functions - of which I understand about 5% (I did go on one of Jessops' instruction courses but as I'm not particularly interested in how the technology works I took in little of the jargon). The subject and composition is of more interest to me. Tom
Tom Tulloch-Marshall Posted 14 November , 2020 Share Posted 14 November , 2020 Breakfast was delayed to go and get this one. My grandfather was wounded in an attack just off into the fog here (Nov 1917) - several men from his battalion who were killed during the same raid are buried at the far end of this cemetery. Your not, but even if you were you'd be forgiven for that one; Delville Wood I assume. I was just admiring Tom's Thiepval Memorial too and thinking if some of my black and white stuff might be worth dusting off. Literally as they are 35mm prints in boxes which need a good vacuum. So that will be a no then. Pete.

I've got the same photo from much the same spot, the difference being that the temperature was about 30 degrees C higher. Unfortunately I've not got enough milk for the hot chocolate until we do the big lockdown shop tomorrow. I'll rub my hands together in the meantime. Pete.
