Uncle George Posted 8 May , 2018 Share Posted 8 May , 2018 Yes indeed. It was for a time thought that he served during the First war as a captain in the Royal Marines. This is now thought not to have been the case. And yes - 10,000! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-27426329

Knotty Posted 10 May , 2018 Share Posted 10 May , 2018 (edited) Well done UG, The picture is of him in his Artist Rifles uniform, with whom he initially joined up in Nov 1915. It was inspired by seaJanes reference to Journeys End above and my next clue was to have been, “he’s topical in this thread”. A nice link here to his history:- http://www.surreyinthegreatwar.org.uk/story/rc-sherriff-the-man-behind-journeys-end/ Edited 10 May , 2018 by Knotty
rolt968 Posted 10 May , 2018 Share Posted 10 May , 2018 A cricketer. Not a gentleman. Did not survive the war. An interesting interpretation. But no. Haven't we had Percy Jeeves before? ]"Not a gentleman" refers to his status in the game for those of us old enough to remember. He would appear on a scorecard as surname, initial(s) rather that Mr initial(s) surname. His name still appears in the current Playfair Cricket Annual.
