Thanks guys. Got "Challenge of Battle" last time it was on sale and enjoyed it, although I wasn't sure about it when I started.

I've had a go at creating a Kindle file from a CEF nominal roll/embarkation list. I have made it available for free on Nov. 8.

Thanks Ken. I got it for just over a dollar tonight.

War Letters 1914-1918 Vol. 1, based on the letters of 17 year-old Wilbert Spencer, a young British officer who died at Neuve Chapelle, is now available free on Amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Letters-1914-1918-Vol-British-ebook/dp/B00JNNXS9

The book contains extensive notes to accompany the letters and almost all the notes contain links to a wide range of freely available online resources including battalion diaries, official histories, training manuals, trench maps etc. I hope people will find it interesting.

Many thanks for the correction Nigel. http://www.amazon.co.uk/War-Letters-1914-1918-Vol-British-ebook/dp/B00JNNXS90 is indeed the correct link. My apologies to anyone who tried the previous link. The book will be available free for the foreseeable future. If people do download and read it I would be very interested to hear what they think. They can contact me through the warletters.net website.

Oh no, that's a big difference Hazel! Hope 'Castles of Steel' is on offer soon at Amazon.ca

I don't know the process regarding authors giving permission for offers, but can't understand why they don't do it across the board for other countries too. Amazon.com have offers at times that aren't on offer on Amazon.uk, and vice versa

It seems to happen quite a lot. Mark Tanner's book "War Letters 1914-1918 is free on .uk but $3.00 on .ca which I did not mind at all. In any case, I liked it so much that Ihave ordered the next in the series for the same price. A naval one this time. As far as "Castles of Steel" is concerned I will just keep my eyes open. Maybe Amazon thinks that only those living in Britain have any interest in the war!! Any daily or monthly deals that come up when I go to the Kindle store are weird novels that I would never read.

I have always been reluctant to buy a Kindle, because I've always preferred the feel of a book, as many people do.

However, I'm slowly coming around to the idea, but I'd like some more information on them before I do anything. Amazon have this offer at the moment - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00KDRUCJY/ref=fs_bour - which looks very good, but what do I get for it?

There seems to be quite a lot of "add on extras" on the right hand side of the page, and I'm confused about the two prices that are quoted: what's the diffrence between "Configuration - with special offers at £59" and "Configuration - without special offers at £69"?

Can anyone help me with this, please? Thank you.

"With special offers" you get it cheaper because it will effectively show you ads when you lock it or unlock it rather than the standard lock screen.

It comes with a USB charger cable (which is a standard USB to micro USB), so as long as you have something with USB ports you don't really need the separate charger (and it seem to charge quite happily from my iPhone charger with the correct cable plugged in for example). Cover is useful or it will get knocked about, it also locks/unlocks automatically as close/open the case so you don't have to remember to do it seprately (saves power, and particularly if you put a PIN on it, protects your personal data).

Dreadnought: Britain, Germany and the Coming of the Great War Robert K. Massie 99p. One of the 'Black Friday' deals. (Queue up nicely now :) )

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/ref=pe_151291_58865251_pe_row1_b2/?ASIN=B00D5FOGL6

For Americans it's $1.55 on Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=dreadnought

Hazel I see it's not available on Amazon.ca

I asked a few authors about this and they told me that they are all ran as separate businesses, (although presumably still owned by Amazon) and that's why any of the countdown and kindle daily deals don't appear on Amazon.ca but are on Amazon.com and Amazon.uk. Apparently, Amazon.com and Amazon.uk do tend to have the same deals, but not always.

Indie authors have more say in which of their books appear in the countdown deals and can ask all of Amazon to offer the deals but authors with a publisher don't. The publisher decides. I hope that's right and I'm sure I'll be corrected if it isn't. Confusing? It is!

A relative of mine who lives in Canada, has an account with Amazon.com to buy the deals. Is this possible for you?

Not too sure about the difference, but something you might like to try before forking out any money is the free kindle reading app http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html?docId=1000425503 This will enable any PC, mac, tablet etc to be used as a Kindle reader. It's provided by Amazon, works really well and is free.
