Here is a group picture of the 7th Gloucesters. No picture of Sidney George Barnfield of the 2/4th Gloucesters I'm afraid.

I am trying to identify officers in the 10th Gloucestershire Battalion. Specifically company commanders who were present when the 10th formed, trained and embarked to France in 1915. I have names from the spreadsheet compiled by David Drinkwater, from photographs published in the Graphic, and these are: H. Enriquez, WR Paterson, EH Sale and IR Gibbs. My Great Great Uncle, John Spencer, was a private in the 10th Gloucesters and was killed in action in April 1918. Of the few effects I have of his is a studio photograph of an officer (unnamed), who is not one of our family, but may be his company commander. If I could match the photograph with one in the Graphic it would give me John's company and add some background to his story. The fact that this photograph survived suggests this person meant something to my relative.

Hi,

Firstly welcome to the forum.

The mods might want to merge this post with the original topic from 2013

https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/194623-soldiers-pictured-in-the-cheltenham-chronicle-gloucester-graphic/

The officers you mention are all in the group photo from 28 Nov. 1914, they were either killed or wounded and feature in edition dated 9 Oct 1915 as individual photos which you can see below. Hope one of them matched you studio photo.

Hi Dave

Thank you for posting the photographs of officers of the 10th Glos. Btn. I have looked at those and I would guess that the studio photo I have looks like H Enriquez. However, I will need to confirm this as this photo is with my father in Bristol and  due to current restrictions I havnt seen for a while, so this is all down to memory at the moment! However when I next get to see him and the family photos I will hopefully be able to confirm the likeness, and I will get back to you again. Even if it isnt, it is still very rewarding to put faces to the names of soldiers that my relative fought with and I am very grateful to you for collating the information from the Graphic and making it available. I have accessed the 10th Glos. Btn war diaries from the National archives, so I can now match many of the officers with the group photograph. When my relative, Pte John Spencer,  was killed in April 1918 the 10th Glos had been disbanded and he was part of the 13th Entrenching Btn and he was serving with the Oxfor and Bucks Light Infantry. Unfortunately, their war dairies no longer exist, so the final part of his story is more difficult to study.

Hello Dave,

Have you got any photographs of 1/5th Gloucestershire Regt., A Co., from 1915 - early 1916?

This is for a research piece on my relatives who were in A Co. (although in unknown platoons).

Thank you :)

Dave,

I am still researching the 1/5th battalion Gloucestershire Regiment, and I am writing a book about my relatives whilst serving in the battalion. I have a list of articles from the Cheltenham Chronicle and Gloucester Graphic, but don't have the photographs to match them. Could you potentially send the photographs? The list outlines the title of the article, the first sentence of the description, and the month in which it was published, to aid you in finding the articles; I am missing articles from 1915.

5th Gloucesters at Chelmsford (THESE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN DURING THEIR MARCH) – September 1914

Recruits in Gloucester – September 1914

The Fifth Battalion Gloucester Regiment at Chelmsford (WE GIVE A FURTHER SERIES OF THE 5TH GLOUCESTERS AT WORK AND PLAY…) – September 1914

Training the New 5th (Reserve) Battalion Gloucester Regiment – September 1914

Cheltenham Recruits for England’s New Army Pages 1, 2 and 3 – September 1914

With The 5th Gloucesters at Chelmsford (EFFICIENT AND BUSY ON BRIGADE WORK…) – September 1914

With the 5th Gloucesters at Chelmsford (SERIES OF INTERESTING PICTURES…) – September 1914

With the 5th Gloucesters at Chelmsford (SERIES OF SNAPS TAKEN DURING THE PAST WEEK WITH THE POPULAR 5TH GLO’STERS…) – 14th November 1914

With the 5th Gloucesters at Chelmsford (A FURTHER SERIES OF PICTURES…) – December 1914

With the 5th Gloucesters at Chelmsford (A FEW MORE SNAPS OF THE WORK AND PLAY OF THE 5TH GLOUCESTERS…) – December 1914

5th Gloucesters at the Canadian v. 5th Gloucesters Football Match – December 19th 1914

1/5th Gloucesters on the Plain – September 1916

Thank you.

Hello Dave,

I hate to be a burden but are there any articles/photos on the 7th Bn. Gloucestershire Regiment in Gallipoli or Mesopotamia (June 1915 - April 1917 specifically)?

Regards

Hi Dave, ignore my last comment. Do you have the photograph of the article entitled "1/5th Gloucesters On The Plain" from September (6th?) 1916?

Hi Dave,

I was wondering if you could help with a photo I would really like to try and obtain? I am doing some research on my family history and would really like to track it down.

I have the archive ref, ID, name, date of publication. Perhaps you could let me know if you are able to do this and I'll send over the details. With thanks

Hi Dave,

thank you so much for replying.

The entry on the database is no 3824:

ID: 3794 FARMER, Harry George, Corporal 1916 Cheltenham Chronicle & Gloucestershire Graphic, 10 June 79th Co R.G.A., wedding photo.

I hope that is enough to go on.

Thank you so much,

Kind regards

Hi Dave,

Wayne here 😀.  The RAIL ARCHIVING TRUST at Toddington are looking at building a memorial to all Great Western employees who worked on the Honeybourne Line who died during WW1.  Some of them may have been from Cheltenham and surrounding areas. Have you any ideas about identifying these men please?

All the very best

Hi Wayne,

Nice to hear from you. Nothing stands out re local GWR men. I’ll have a read through Leaving All That Was Dear and my Graphic database to see what turns up.

Meanwhile there are around 1300 images of GWR men who died with brief details of where they worked that when checked out might reveal some local men

Dave, you are a wonder!  Already filled in several names with photos from the various Stations along the line.  Trouble is, I’m having trouble logging back on to the site!  I will keep trying.  On the meantime, have you got any photographs of O Gibbs (died June 1918) and F Y Workman (died June 1918), both from Cheltenham.  Their names are on the GWR Fallen Website but no photo.  Thank you soooo much once again!

Only a photo of Workman from 13 April 1918 plus his entry from Leaving All That Was Dear.

There are quite a few more men in the book who worked for GWR. I can’t see your email in my address book so if you still have mine (starts with djd)send me a message and I’ll forward you the details.

Dave, that’s brilliant … very much appreciated! The display at Toddington is likely to be inside the display coach owned by the RATS.  Thanks to you and your advice, we have made a great start … thank you.  Unfortunately, I can’t find your email address of tel number.  Please can you PM me with your details and I’ll call you? 👍👍👍👍👍

Hi Dave, Wayne again …. How wide is the radius for your fantastic research please? Wondering if it reaches Toddington or Winchcombe?  If it does, are there any photos of No. 13301 Frank C Wynniatt from Didbrook please?  Another GWR worker from the Toddington Engineering Dept.

Here’s hoping ….. your assistance is very much appreciated 👍
