I examined the card with a loupe and played with the contrast to highlight as much as possible. The cap badge looks to be star shaped, the shoulder title long and curved. C.G's perhaps. Carte Postale card, numbered in pencil "3715" to the rear.
Muerrisch Posted 23 July , 2017 Share Posted 23 July , 2017 Maybe, thank you, but the baggage packing is very un-Guards-like.

Would that be another pointer towards it being a Guards unit ? Both men wearing spurs, but the man on the right wears a lanyard, so he is not a Guardsman. Could still be CG because all infantry had ASC drivers attached for the heavy wagons. ASC wore lanyard.

I described our destination to my work colleague as "my favourite postcard shop" as on previous visits I'd found a second card featuring a man already in my collection and an identical copy of an RGA group postcard, only to strike gold for a third time. All three origional cards had come from different sources.

RJones Posted 1 August , 2017 Share Posted 1 August , 2017 Hello, I've been collecting postcards for a while, and now have a small album of mostly unidentified soldiers. The one I find most poignant is below, of a soldier with his scruffy old dog. There's nothing on the reverse, so maybe someone can tell something from the uniform? 4thGordons Posted 2 August , 2017 Share Posted 2 August , 2017 I think they are a version of (perhaps a TF version?) 1903 pattern ammunition pouches either side of the buckle but I am not sure what that is outside unless it is a flattened squashed (and empty) one. FROGSMILE Posted 3 August , 2017 Share Posted 3 August , 2017 (edited) There had originally been colour sergeants of RE, but as Muerrisch says, they no longer existed by WW1. Atnomis is right that he is a staff sergeant and, from the brass badges above his stripes, a member of the specialised 'artificer' grouping.
