Hi,

I noticed in one of the posts on this topic, that somebody had transcribed the names on St. Mary-on-the-Quay War Memorial in Bristol.

in the list they had found:-

MAZZIE F (No record with the CWGC)

MAZZIE W (No record with the CWGC

These two were brothers, and were my ancestors.

For some reason they are listed on CWGC as serving as MASSEY.

They were both sons of George Edward Mazzie (born Mazzei, but spelling changed) and Mary Jane Irvin.

Their names were William john Mazzie and Frederick Thomas Mazzie.

On the CWGC the details are as follows:-

In Memory of

Fireman and Trimmer WILLIAM JOHN MASSEY

S.S. "Luis" (West Hartlepool), Mercantile Marine

who died age 23

on 13 April 1918

TALANA FARM CEMETERY

I don't know why some records have their surname as Mazzie and others as Massey.

I have enclosed William John Mazzie's "Widow's Farthing" to show that it is spelt Mazzie.

Thanks,

Darin Mazzie,

Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Stowe by Chartley -

8576 CSM Richard Bailey - 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters

A working party of some 200 men moved to dugouts in the old German support line to provide a working party. 100 men from each of 'A' and 'B' Companies set out to dig a trench forward of the of the British 1st line and situated just north of Beaumont Hamel.

The enemy realised something was going on and sent over a massive barrage which had devastating results for the men. 2/Lt Crowther and 8 OR's killed immediately, 2/Lt Rees and 18 OR's wounded. 12 men including Richard Bailey are listed as being killed on 24 November 1916. Richard was aged 35 years and a native of Stafford, the son of William Bailey and husband of Annie Elizabeth.

Dalbury -

6112 Sgt Moses Holloway - 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters.

He died whilst attached to 17th Bn which attacked the Schwaben Redoubt on 9th October 1916. The 9th Bn meanwhile where enjoying a football match on that day. It is likely that Moses stayed behind after the 9th Bn left the trenches on 30 Sept 1916. He was born and enlisted in Derby.

Ashford -

18370 L/Cpl George Hartley Vickers - 9th Bn Sherwood Foresters

He was born at Ashford and enlisted in Chesterfield (He would have known my family :) )

Battle of Thiepval - 26th to 29th September 1916 -

On the 27th men of the battalion where holding Hessian trench or part of it anyway. It was the new front line and the enemy wanted it back. Despite machine gun fire and bombing, the trench remained in British hands. The 9th Bn moved out after relief at 3 am on 27th September 1917.

Hope that helps.

Not sure if you have done Swanwick, Derbys but I recently helped out the church in researching men they have.

WW1 - I have 6 men not found but these may be men who survived as I have not had sight of the memorial yet but only a church list.

WW2 - 3 men nor found.

A K Fryer - Not found yet

Hi Steve,

Could A. K. Fryer be this chap?

Name: FRYER

Initials: A

Nationality: Canadian

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Canadian Pioneers

Unit Text: 2nd Bn.

Age: 34

Date of Death: 26/03/1916

Service No: 166767

Although at first glance from his CWGC record he doesn't appear to have an obvious connection with Swanwick, in his service papers on the Library and Archives Canada website, it says he was born in Somercotes, which isn't too far away. http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-119.01-e.php?&id_nbr=402736&interval=20&&PHPSESSID=sf8j9pmfq4aju18t962prsh204

Hope this helps

Kind regards

Rich

He is a possibility if his parents moved to Swanwick. I am still not convinced the men not found actually died. I believe that Fred Hanbury survived the war and I do not known how the list was made. My contact did not seem to know that men were buried in the churchyard!

I need to get up to Swanwick at some stage to have a look at the memorial.

I will keep him on file - just in case.
