Hi Memorial Hunter,

I am still looking for information on my Grandfather's mother, Evelyn Mary Goldney PURCHAS nee MORSE. Evelyn was daughter of Thomas MORSE of DURSLEY.Gloucestershire. Evelyn emigrated to NZ where she married Dr Arthur Challinor PURCHAS. When Major Dr Purchas went to serve in Egypt, Evelyn somehow went also!! Evelyn was about 46yrs old, mother of three boys, two of whom also fought in WW1 (Arthur Jenour and Thomas Challinor).

Letters from Evelyn describe her role as being like a nurse aid at the No17 General Hospital. She died of typhoid fever. I have a photo of her grave, and today my mother discovered a little box containing her tiny white gloves and a receipt for her grave site in the British Protestant Cemetery, Cairo.

I am keen to know how a lady in her 40's managed to make her way to a war, and die there while her husband and two sons thank-fully made it home. Are people such as Evelyn recognised for their quiet contribution to the war effort, paying the ultimate price..her life?

Let those who come after see to it that their names be not forgotten"
