I will keep a look out for him Regards Memorialhunter Hello Memorial Hunter, Thanks for your reply. I think I've found his name on the Stoke-On-Trent council website! (stoke.gov.uk) They have listed the names of those killed in the Boer War, WW1 and WW2. I believe the 'A. B. Williamson' is my Gran's cousin. I'm not sure if his name is on the Fenton war memorial or on the town hall wall. Is it possible to see the one in the town hall? I think I'll try and get over for Remembrance Sunday, but maybe before. He signed-up, aged 19, over 3 years before he was killed. (by gas) He wasn't married, but was one of 10 children, so I'm sure he'll still have relatives living in the area. I'll find out as I continue with my Mum's family tree. I have a son of 18, who's intending to join the army. I hope he changes his mind. Helen, Otley, West Yorks.

Yes, it took me a while to find his birth details, because on every other document I've found, he was Albine. I can only think that his parents couldn't read and his name was spelt wrong when his birth was registered. I'd be very grateful if you could send me the image of the memorial, thanks. An extract from "The London Gazette," dated 12th March, 1918, records the following:- "For most conspicuous bravery and brilliant leadership. When the enemy penetrated some distance into our position and the situation was extremely critical, Capt. McReady-Diarmid at once led his company forward through a heavy barrage. He immediately engaged the enemy, with such success that he drove them back at least 300 yards, causing numerous casualties and capturing 27 prisoners. The following day the enemy again attacked and drove back another company which had lost all it's officers. This gallant officer at once called for volunteers and attacked. He drove them back again for 300 yards, with heavy casualties. Throughout this attack Capt. McReady-Diarmid led the way himself, and it was absolutely and entirely due to his marvellous throwing of bombs that the ground was regained. His absolute disregard for danger, his cheerfulness and coolness at a most trying time, inspired all who saw him. This most gallant officer was eventually killed by a bomb when the enemy had been driven right back to their original starting point." GrahamC Posted 3 September , 2010 Share Posted 3 September , 2010 Just stating the obvious really - but have to say what a great job Memorialhunter and others are doing here. It's the sort of thing I expected the NIWM site to look like when I was collecting all the data for the High Peak region a few years back. Keep up the good work. I must look out my notes and try to conribute. Graham
