Many public schools also had their Roll of Honour, especially for WW1 - names probably duplicated on public memorials for the local regiment - maybe not.... Many schools that today have a CCF had an OTC during this period...

Thanks memorialhunter - Albert George and Ernest Edwin Buoy were brothers, both Great Uncles of mine. (Albert Edward Booy is probably also related, as the Booy/Buoy names are usually one and the same!).

Ernest's name is on the war memorial in Miserden where he lived.

I have a copy of the original programme for the unveiling of the War memorial held at St Peter's on November 2nd 1922 in Wolverhampton. Within this programme is a list of some of the fallen and comparing it with Memorialhunters list above I might have found the answer to two of the 'questionable names' namely;

LEWIS EDWIN - according to the programme he was a Major in the 6th South Staffs searching CWGC I found

Major Edwin Lewis 1/6th South Staffs KIA 30/9/18 buried at Brie British Cemetery (Grave IV.C.10)

WARREN HARRY - although no exact match in the programme there was a

Sgt William Henry Werren, 9121, 1st South Staffs KIA 1/7/16 remembered with Honour on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier & Face 7B)

Hope these are some help and I will have another look through the lists to see if I can help with any others.

Ref: St Peter's War Memorial,

The unveiling ceremony programme confirms that;

ADCOCK is H.N Adcock , 2nd Lieut 1st East Kents

also there is only one William Jones listed as a single Christian name, the others all use 'William' along with a second name. I think the William Jones on the Memorial is

William Jones, T/30544, Driver ASC attached to the 9th Field Ambulance RAMC who died on 27/7/17 aged 22 and is buried at Canada Farm Cemetery (II.A.10)

the son of Mr & Mrs Jones of Townwell Fold, Wolverhampton.

Hi memorialhunter.

You have a record of Corporal John Francis Daly native of Bedminster Bristol. But on www.ancestry.co.uk they say that he was born in Kensington, Middlesex, residence at time of enlistment was North Finchley, Middlesex , and he enlisted at St Pancreas, Middlesex. ( But it doesn't explain exactly which records this comes from). This was my great-grand-father's brother, who was born in Kensington, and I am trying to find out more about him. Family tradition has it that he was killed at Delville Wood, which fits with the 10th battalion of the Essex regiment who were there on the right date.

Could you check where your information came from ? Maybe there are several J.F. Daly's which is causing some confusion.

Thanks very much.

Hi simonc25

Thankyou for making contact.

Yes there are two John Francis Daly's. However the CWGC have recorded the surname incorrect as DALEY. his medal card has DALY.. Where the Bedminster came in, when I originally looked for a F J Daly born in Bristol or near by on the FreeBMD only one showed, and his birth was registered in Bedminster 1894 which would have been about the correct period.

The information has now been corrected

HANBURY – WAR MEMORIAL

STAFFORDSHIRE

The memorial is located inside the parish church

Erected by the parishioners and friends in proud and thankful memory of the men who died for their country in the Great War 1914-1919

PEGG Joseph Pte 24955, 4th Grenadier Guards died 12 October 1917. Buried at Artillery Wood Cemetery, Belgium

Hi - I've just found this site (recommended by a friend). We are researching the Tutbury, Staffs War Memorial with a view to producing a "Book of Remembrance" in time for Remembrance Day this year - on searching this site we found that a Tutbury search found the Hanbury, Staffs Memorial documented by memorialhunter - it has 5 names in common with the Tutbury memorial one of which is of particular interest - Joseph Pegg. We have so far only narrowed the identification of Joseph Pegg down to 7 possible entries on the CWGC website and wondered (after all this time) if memorialhunter could remember why he selected this particular J Pegg - I know the Hanbury post was a long time ago but any thoughts would be appreciated

cheers

Hi Oldbloke

Joseph Pegg.

He is named as Joseph Pegg on the Hanbury War Memorial. On the CWGC there are three Joseph Pegg's and variant

One Joseph who gave his birth place as Horninglow, Staffs another Joseph birth place as Hickley, Leics and Joseph Herbert from Hartshorn, Derbyshire. further research I found the following.

1901 Census. There was a Joseph C 1878 living with his parents Joseph and Mary at the Cock Inn, Hanbury. 1911 he is not in Hanbury, his parents are now living with their daughter and son in law at Ivy House, Hanbury

On the SDGW there is a Joseph who gave his place of birth Horninglow and as that fitted in with the location as being not to far from Hanbury as the crow flies and also that a Joseph was missing from Hanbury it may be one of the same. I took that record hoping that some person may say no it's not that one but this one.

There are no Burnt Records for the above Joseph, I have looked at what records there are for J Pegg

The only way it could be confirmed which Joseph died is to have a look at the local newspapers to see if he was mentioned.

I have not come across so far any other Joseph Pegg on a war memorial

I will have a look in the graveyard in Hanbury again for any Pegg headstones, he could be mentioned

Good luck in your research
